CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION

1. Call to Orded Roll Cali
Commissioner Voorhees called the meeting to order at 5:35 p.m. New
commissioner Sara Deavenport was introduced.
Commissioners Present: Bolles, Deavenport, Knowlton, Liston,
Smith, Voorhees
Commissioners Absent: Cornell & Redo (excused), Vinson
Staff Present: Reinhart, Todd, Noguera
Others Present: None
2. Approval of Minutes
Motion was made (Knowlton) to approve the minutes of the April 10, 2006
meeting. Motion was carried (Smith).
3. Old Business
a. None
4. New Business
Commissioner Voorhees inquired as to how to handle requests regarding
personal information about commissioners. The process is to refer the request to
Marylyn and she will e-mail each commissioner for their approval on a case-by-
case basis.
5. Staff Updates
a. Taste of the Arts 2006 Summary — Todd
Staff member Todd reviewed the summary of this year's Taste of the Arts
Festival. Estimated attendance was between 5,000 and 8,000. Next year's
festival will be held on May 20 in Memorial Park. The goal is to secure more
sponsorship. A silent auction of items donated by several featured artists was
held for city employees. A total of $1,205.00 was raised and all but three items
were sold. Proceeds from the sale benefit the Gayle McCandliss Arts Award
fund.
b. Arts Master Plan Process - Reinhart
The Commission meeting for August will be moved to Tuesday, August 29 in City
Council Chambers at 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. At this meeting, the Commission will
entertain comments from the public about the draft. On October 5, the City

Council has scheduled a workshop to hear comments from the commission and
general public. Staff member Reinhart advised commissioners to review the
draft and decide if a meeting in July is necessary to discuss any issues before
the public meeting takes place.
c. 2007 Port -sponsored Chula Vista Banner Project - Todd
Each banner artist's original artwork is up and on display. Digitization is in
process and when completed, the originals will be given back to the artists or
they will be placed in storage and displayed again. Port funding for a new round
of banners is $18, 500 for the fiscal year 2006-2007 and a call for artists will be
conducted in October.
d. Concerts in the Park — Todd
Music in the Park concerts are every Sunday starting June 4 and end on August
27. Attendance to date has been very good.
d. Will Hyde Memorial Dedication — Reinhart
The Will Hyde Memorial Dedication will be held on Tuesday, June 20 at 4:30
p.m. Commissioner Redo is the emcee of the event. The Mayor will unveil the
"larger than life" bust. A good turnout is expected.
e. Rancho del Rey Library Planning — Reinhart
is The new Rancho del Rey Library will be built and completed within the next
eighteen months. It will be close to 30,000 square feet. Ground breaking is
scheduled in October. A nice feature for this library will be the creation of a
sculpture garden. One percent ($75,000) of building purchase costs is dedicated
to funding of public art pieces on the site.
f. Possible Harborside Park Art Project and Substation Art Project - Reinhart
A possible project for Harborside Park is an art mural in the skate park area of
the park. It will be designed to deter graffiti. A budget is to be developed.
Another possible project is to mask the SDG&E substation next to, the Otay
Recreation Center through sculptural pieces and landscaping.
6. Oral Communications
Commissioner Bolles mentioned that he attended the Montevalle and Salt Creek
Park grand openings. They are very nice, "state of the art" facilities that would
be nice to have future VIP receptions.

7. Adjournment
Adjournment was made at 6:41p.m. The next Cultural Arts Commission meeting
will be held at 5:30pm on Monday July 24, 2006 in the Library Conference
Room of the Civic Center Library.
