Chair Redo called the meeting to order at 5:47 p.m. Commissioners Present: Commissioners Absent: Staff Present: Others Present: Redo, Cornell, Bolles, Deavenport, Knowlton, Smith, Voorhees Knowlton, (excused), Liston (excused), Vinson (unexcused) Reinhart, Todd, Noguera Souval, Giddens IIPA, Quijano, Fuentes 2. Approval of Minutes Motion was made (Commissioner Cornell) and seconded (Commissioner Deavenport) to approve the minutes of the April 9, 2007 meeting. Motion was carried unanimously. 3. Oral Communications Jennifer Quijano, Constituent Services Manager, discussed the City of Chula Vista Beautification Awards. The Mayor.has requested a volunteer from the Cultural Arts Commission to be part of the 2007 selection process. Commissioner Cornell has graciously volunteered. The nomination deadline is July 15 and the awards ceremony will be on October 29 at the Olympic Training Center. Cynthia Fuentes, Development Coordinator for XLNC-1, announced that there is a non -paid internship opportunity available for a high school junior, senior, or college student. 4. Old Business a. Update on Urban Core Specific Plan Process — Cornell Approximately seventy percent of the plan has been adopted. Some zoning issues still need to be resolved. b. McCandliss Awards 2007 = Deavenport There are a total of three Rising Star nominees: Adrian Murillo, Angela McDuffie and Edgar Gonzalez. It was recommended that the $1,200 monetary award be divided among the three nominees equally. Deavenport also noted the nominees for the Distinguished Service Award, Mitsuyo Fukuda, the Bravo Award,.Victor Manuel Diaz (posthumous award), and the Literary Arts Award, to be shared Page 1 of 3 ` between Deborah Halverson and Max Branscomb. Motion was made (Deavenport) and seconded (Bolles) to approve all of the nominees for the 2007 McCandliss Awards. Motion was carried unanimously. It was suggested that next year a letter be sent to teachers at the beginning of the school year asking them to keep an eye out for graduating seniors that would be good candidates for the Rising Star Awards. 5. New Business a. Report from Port of San Diego Public Art Committee's City of Chula Vista Representative —Souval Representative Souval reported that the Tidelands Banner Project has been approved by the Public Art Committee. The Port Commissioners have yet to approve the budget for the project. The San Diego Repertory Theater has entered into an agreement with the City of National City for use of the former National City Public Library building. Urban Trees 4 temporary art exhibit on the SD Embarcadero will be on display by the beginning of June. 6. Staff Updates 0 a. Taste of the Arts 2007 Planning Update — Todd Commissioners were given their information packets for the festival. The National Arts Program has 174 entrants. The exhibit will be in the Parkway Community Center. b. Office of Arts and Culture Budget Update — Reinhart The budget for 2007/08 reflect the reductions that were taken mid 2006/07. 7. Commissioner Comments Commissioner Cornell would like to centralize information about events and activities that several community organizations are holding so that a master calendar can be created by the City of Chula Vista and accessed on-line. Commissioner Deavenport was very pleased with the Ballet Folklorico Group that was highly recommended by Commissioner Bolles. Commissioner Smith inquired about how the Taste of the Arts Festival sponsors will be acknowledged and thanked; Commissioner Redo will thank them on stage during his welcoming address. Staff member Reinhart mentioned that Taste of the Arts sponsor, Target, will be handing out 1,000 give-aways to the public at the festival. Page 2 of 3 4 � Commissioner Redo has announced that he will not seek to renew his position as the commission's chairperson in June; therefore, a new chair and vice chairperson should be elected in June. Commissioners will e-mail Commissioner Redo the names of nominees. Commissioner Redo thanked XLNC —1 Radio station and [IPA for hosting the Cultural Arts Commission meeting. 8.
