CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION

2. Approval of Minutes
. Motion was made (Commissioner Bolles) and seconded (Cornell) to approve the
minutes of the May 14, 2007 meeting. Motion was carried unanimously.
3. Oral Communications
There were no oral communications.
4. Old Business
a. 24 Hour Fitness Public Art Piece — Reinhart
There was some confusion by some members of the public as to the process of
how the art piece was chosen and where it is to be placed. The Public Art
Subcommittee and the Cultural Arts Commission recommended three proposals
to the developer who ultimately chose one of the three. The Third Avenue
Village Association Promotions Sub -Committee also endorsed the selection.
Although the piece is privately owned, it must be displayed in full view of the
public. All Public Art Sub -Committee criteria regarding the art piece, including
the overall budge,t have been met.
b. McCandliss Awards Presentation 2007 - Deavenport
The McCandless Awards were presented at the City Council meeting last
Tuesday, June 5. It was very well received. The ceremony is available to view
on streaming video at the City's website.

5. New Business
a. Report from Port of San Diego Public Art Committee's City of Chula Vista
Representative — Souval

The Port of San Diego's fiscal budget will be adopted on June 12 and should
include $36,500 fora second Tidelands Banner Project.

Souval and staff member Todd will staff an information table at the Port of San
Diego's Urban Trees IV exhibition opening on June 23.
Souval will give the Cultural Arts Commissioners a copy of the Port's Public Art
Committee program highlights, which describes how Souval represents the City
of Chula Vista.
There will be an Invitational Art Exhibit at the Bonita Museum on July 7, featuring
local artists.
b. Election of Cultural Arts Commission Chair and Vice Chair for 200772008
Commissioners were asked to elect the commission Chair and Vice -chair for the
July 1, 2007 — June 30, 2008 term. Current chair Redo moved to elect
Commissioner Voorhees as Chair and Commissioner Bolles as Vice Chair.
Motion was seconded (Knowlton). The vote was unanimous. Commissioner
Voorhees has been elected as Chair and Commissioner Bolles has been elected
• as Vice Chair for the period July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008.
6. Staff Updates
a. Music in the Parr 2007 Update — Todd
Attendance at the first two concerts was about 350 each. Both were very well
received.
The Star News provided the newspaper inserts to the City of Chula Vista's Office
of Arts and Culture at no charge. Motion was made (Commissioner Redo) to
send a letter expressing the Commission's gratitude for The Star News'
generosity for not charging for the inserts. Motion was seconded (Commissioner
Bolles). Motion was carried unanimously.
7. Commissioner Comments
Staff member Reinhart received an inquiry from the Mayor's Office regarding who
would be attending the Boards and Commissions Recognition Event on June 18.
Commissioners Boles, Cornell, Deavenport and Smith will be attending.
Commissioner Smith inquired as to any feedback that was received about the
Taste of the Arts Festival and the attendance of the event. Staff member
Reinhart reported that there was a lot of positive feedback about the new location
and participating restaurants were very pleased. Estimated attendance was
4,000.

7. Commissioner Comments, continued
Commissioner Cornell announced that artist Mel Lawson's would be working on
a large-scale horse and rider sculpture at the Bonita Museum over the next
several months. She also mentioned that the Southwestern College journalism
department collaborated with author Max Branscomb to create the first volume of
the "Bonita Stories."
Commissioner Bolles asked about the status of the Arts Master Plan. Staff
member Reinhart mentioned that further action is tentatively on the schedule for
the Council meetings this fall.
Commissioner Redo said that he has been honored to serve as the Chair of the
Commission for the last five years and has been happy to work with a great staff.
He added that the collective spirit of the commissioners has helped to re -position
the Cultural Arts Commission and he is very proud to have been a part of it.
Staff member Reinhart mentioned that the next year's Taste of the Arts Festival
will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2008.
8. Adjournment
Adjournment was made at 6.45 p.m. The next Cultural Arts Commission meeting
will be held at 5.45 p.m on July 9, 2007 in the Library Conference Room of the
Civic Center Library.
