CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
Monday, 5:45 p.m. - Library Conference Room

1. Call to Order/ Roll Call
Chair Voorhees called the meeting to order at 5:47 p.m.

2. Approval of Minutes
Motion was made (Commissioner Deavenport) and seconded (Commissioner
Knowlton) to approve the minutes of the December 10 meeting. Motion was
carried unanimously.
3. Oral Communications
There were no oral communications.
4. Old Business
There was no old business to discuss.
5. New Business
a. Report from Interim Library Director, Leah Browder
Interim Library Director Leah Browder briefly discussed the city's budget
challenges. She presented her "Immediate Strategic Leverage" model to the
group and requested that she and the Cultural Arts Commission have a strategic
brainstorming session at the next meeting.
b. McCandliss Award Committee Assignments
Commissioners Glenn, Knowlton and Liston will be on this year's committee;
Commissioner Knowlton will chair the committee.

c. Port Public Art Committee Update
Port Representative Dency Souval will present an update at the next meeting.
6. Staff Updates
a. Public Art Repair Update - Reinhart
The repairs for the "Tree of Life" art piece have been completed. The cost was
under $800 and will be paid from the Redevelopment Agency's Fine Arts Fund.
b. Library Cultural Arts Programs Update - Reinhart
Kim Laru, Librarian, will be handling the library's adult and cultural programming.
There will be a "Cultural Arts Program" section in the library calendar that is
published every quarter.
c. Taste of the Arts 2008 Planning - Reinhart
The performers, zones and featured artists have all been contracted for the
event. The event is on a much smaller scale than previous years due to the
smaller budget.
d. Performing & Visual Arts Grant Application Period Report - Reinhart
The deadline to submit the application is January 25. The amount of the funds
available should be known during the second week of February.
7. Commissioner Comments
Chair Voorhees requested that the Commission send a thank you letter to the
Public Works Department for the wonderful job they did for the public art repairs.
He will draft a letter for the next meeting. Staff member Reinhart will provide a list
of the jobs they have done.
Chair Voorhees also thanked Dency Souval for hosting the farewell dinner for the
for former staff member Ric Todd.
Commissioner Smith expressed her interest in being involved in a "Readers
Theater" program for the library.
Commissioner Deavenport announced that the California Ballet Company would
be the first group to perform in the newly renovated Balboa Theater in downtown
San Diego.
Vice Chair Bolles mentioned that he is applying for a grant for new construction
and modernization of the School of Creative and Performing Arts. The cost for
the project will be about 8 million.

8. Adjoumment
Adjournment was made at 6:31 p.m. The next Cultural Arts Commission meeting
will be held at 5:45 p.m on Monday, Monday, February 11, 2008 in the Library
Conference Room of the Civic Center Library.
