Call to Order/ Roll Call Chair Voorhees called the meeting to order at 5:50 p.m. Commissioners Present: Commissioners Absent: Staff Present: Others Present: 2. Approval of Minutes Bolles, Cornell, Deavenport, Glenn, Knowlton, O'Shaughnessy, Smith, Voorhees Liston (Excused) Reinhart, Noguera Kim Laru Motion was made (Commissioner Cornell) and seconded (Commissioner Deavenport) to approve the minutes of the February 11 meeting. Motion was carried unanimously. 3. Oral Communications Kim Laru, Librarian in charge of the library's adult and cultural programming, announced the events that are scheduled to take place at the Civic Center Branch Library for the next few months: -"Birds and Birders" on March 29 -The San Diego Law Library will be here in the beginning of April to talk about the services they offer. -There will be a May film festival in which the library will show a movie once a week in the month of May. -For June, Laru is working on having a local author, Roger Conley, come to the library and speak about his book. Welcome to our newest commissioner, Susan O'Shaughnessy. Page 1 of 3 V • 4. Old Business Commissioner Glenn inquired about the status of the San Diego Junior Theater. Staff reported that meetings have taken place among various city and community leaders to discuss alternative funding sources to support the Theatre; however, at this time, there are no definitive answers. 5. New Business a. Port Public Art Committee Update Port representative Souval was not available to give an update. 6. Staff Updates a. Taste of the Arts '08 and Music in the Park '08 Updates — Reinhart Due to challenges with the budget, Taste of the Arts will not take place this year. All contracts for the event have been canceled. Since Target and the County of San Diego are major sponsors of the event, staff member Reinhart has requested that the funds be reallocated to pay for the Music in the Park Concerts. Target has agreed and the County has not given a response yet. It has been proposed that the Music in the Park Concert Series will be six concerts instead of twelve as it has been in the past. Two concerts will take place in each of the three venues: Salt Creek Park (June), Veteran's Park (July) and Memorial Park (August). Staff member Reinhart has asked each commissioner to volunteer at a concert to introduce the band and thank the public. (See Attachment A). The National Arts Program is privately funded and will still go on. Artists participating in the program will have their works displayed for public view at the Civic Center Branch Library instead of the Parkway Gym. b. Budget Reduction Impacts — Reinhart The sales and property tax shortfalls have had a major impact on the city's budget and The City manager has imposed a freeze on all remaining expenditures for the fiscal year. The library is creatively planning on how to address these challenges. c. McCandliss Award Nonimations Update — Reinhart There has been one application submitted. The deadline to submit all applications is April 15. Page 2 of 3 • 7. Commissioner Comments Commissioner Bolles announced that he is retiring at the end of the semester from the Chula Vista High School Creative and Performing Arts. He has created the Bolles Arts Foundation, which will assist underserved kids who have limited access to the arts. His Retirement Celebration will be on Saturday, May 31 at the Chula Vista High School Gymnasium from 6:00 p.m. — 9:30 p.m. Commissioner Deavenport mentioned that the California Ballet is performing at the Balboa Theatre on Friday, March 28 at 7:00 p.m. After the performance, a behind -the scenes tour of the newly renovated theatre will take place followed by the opportunity to meet the dancers from OPUS M. Commissioner Cornell mentioned that the Bonita Museum is hosting a juried exhibition from March 8 to March 19. On March 11, the South Bay Benefit Concert will feature the Sweetwater Union High School District's Symphonic Orchestra. On Sunday, March 30, Mel Lawson will have a sculpture demonstration at the Bonita Museum. Commissioner Cornell has announced her intention to resign from the Cultural Arts Commission effective at the end of April 2008. Commissioner O'Shaughnessy announced that the Chula Vista Art Guild has paintings in "Healthy Spirit" and the public can vote for their favorite piece. She • also mentioned that "Bleacher Bums" was a great show to see and the 10th Avenue Theatre is hosting the "Permanent Collection." Staff member Reinhart attended the reception for the Sweetwater Union High School District's Student Art Show last Friday, March 7, 2008. More than 150 people attended the reception. The exhibit will be up the remainder of March through the beginning of April. 8. Adjournment Adjournment was made at 6:48p.m. The next Cultural Arts Commission meeting will be held at 5:45 p.m on Monday, Monday, April 14, 2008 in the Library Conference Room in the Civic Center Library. • Page 3 of 3
