4. Old Business
Commissioner Glenn inquired about the status of the San Diego Junior Theater.
Staff reported that meetings have taken place among various city and community
leaders to discuss alternative funding sources to support the Theatre; however,
at this time, there are no definitive answers.
5. New Business
a. Port Public Art Committee Update
Port representative Souval was not available to give an update.
6. Staff Updates
a. Taste of the Arts '08 and Music in the Park '08 Updates — Reinhart
Due to challenges with the budget, Taste of the Arts will not take place this year.
All contracts for the event have been canceled. Since Target and the County of
San Diego are major sponsors of the event, staff member Reinhart has
requested that the funds be reallocated to pay for the Music in the Park Concerts.
Target has agreed and the County has not given a response yet.
It has been proposed that the Music in the Park Concert Series will be six
concerts instead of twelve as it has been in the past. Two concerts will take
place in each of the three venues: Salt Creek Park (June), Veteran's Park (July)
and Memorial Park (August).
Staff member Reinhart has asked each commissioner to volunteer at a concert to
introduce the band and thank the public. (See Attachment A).
The National Arts Program is privately funded and will still go on. Artists
participating in the program will have their works displayed for public view at the
Civic Center Branch Library instead of the Parkway Gym.
b. Budget Reduction Impacts — Reinhart
The sales and property tax shortfalls have had a major impact on the city's
budget and The City manager has imposed a freeze on all remaining
expenditures for the fiscal year. The library is creatively planning on how to
address these challenges.
c. McCandliss Award Nonimations Update — Reinhart
There has been one application submitted. The deadline to submit all
applications is April 15.
