CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION

1. Call to Order/ Roll Call
Commission Vice Chair Bolles called the meeting to order at 5:47 p.m.

2. Approval of Minutes

Motion was made (Commissioner Knowlton) and seconded (Commissioner
Glenn) to approve the minutes of the April 14 meeting. Motion was carried
unanimously.
3. Oral Communications
Staff member Reinhart introduced Scott Love, Branch Librarian for the Eastlake
Branch and Public Relations Specialist for the Chula Vista Public Library System,
as the new staff liaison for the Cultural Arts Commission. The first meeting he
will attend will be August 11.
4. Old Business
The new public art brochure has been printed. A total of 2,000 brochures will be
distributed among all three library branches.
5. New Business
a. Port Public Art Committee Update — Souval
Staff member Reinhart reported that the Port of San Diego has approved the
installation of "The Fisherman" art piece. It will be located west of the walkway in
front of "The Galley' restaurant.

b. Recommendations of McCandless Awards — Knowlton
Motion was made (Knowlton) and seconded (Liston) to amend the McCandliss
Rising Star Award application criteria to include "students who attend a school in
and/or reside in Chula Vista." Motion was carried unanimously.
Commissioner Knowlton announced that there are seven nominees for the
"Rising Star" award and one for the "Bravo" award. Motion was made (Knowlton)
and seconded (Glenn) to accept all nominees for a McCandless Award as
recommended by the subcommittee. Motion was carried unanimously.
Motion was made (Knowlton) and seconded (O'Shaughnessy) to award a $300
stipend to each of the seven "Rising Star" recipients. Motion was carried
unanimously.
6. Staff Update
a. Music in the Park '08 Updates —Reinhart
Commissioner Glenn will switch places with Commissioner Voorhees to
introduce the first band on June 8.
b. Banner Project Issues — Reinhart
The banners from the 2006 Port -funded Banner Project have been removed
because they are fading and are not in good condition due to amount of time they
have been on display. The hardware is still in place. Staff member Reinhart
mentioned that the Port is interested in funding another series of banners and
Port representative Souval has agreed to coordinate the effort next year.
c. Proposed Art Serres Production — Reinhart
Nancy Laturno, who coordinates "Mainly Mozart" has contacted staff member
Reinhart to request help from the City of Chula Vista to fund an art series at
Mater Dei High School from September through December. Mainly Mozart,
California Ballet and Westwind Brass would be three of the groups participating
in the series.
Staff member Reinhart recommended using the Performing and Visual Arts Task
Force Fund "out -of -cycle" grant request process to consider supporting the
project.
Commissioner Glenn suggested that a pre -show from local groups would be a
gnat way to draw a larger audience to the series.
Commission Vice Chair Bolles recommended contacting the new VAPA Director,
Russ Sperling, to take over William Virchis' role as the representative from
SUHSD to the Task Force

7. Commissioner Comments
Commission Vice Chair Bolles announced that there would be a mural dedication on
June 3 at Chula Vista High School. A new mural was created for the modernized
theater and is representative of many different art genres.
Staff member Reinhart mentioned that there is a vacancy for a commissioner; the
term will be until June 2009 and will be renewable. Interested individuals can
nominate themselves on-line through the City of Chula Vista's web site.
8. Adjournment
Adjournment was made at 6:45p.m. The next Cultural Arts Commission meeting will
be held at 5:45 p.m on. Monday, Monday, June 9, 2008 in the Library Conference
Room in the Civic Center Library.
