HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-11-13 SSC MinutesMINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE SUSTAINABILITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA November 13, 2017 5:00 PM A Regular Meeting of the Sustainability Commission of the City of Chula Vista was called to order at 5:07 pm in the Executive Conference Room 103, Building A, located at 276 Fourth Avenue, Chula Vista, California. ROLL CALL PRESENT: Commissioners Kappes, Matthias, McMillin, Mora, Romo and Chair Valen ABSENT: none MOTION TO EXCUSE: Commissioner McMillin moved to excuse Commissioners Mora and Romo from the meeting held on October 9, 2017. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Matthias and carried with the following vote: Yes — 6 Kappes, Matthias, McMillin, Mora, Romo and Valen No -0 Abstain — 0 STAFF PRESENT: Chief Officer of Sustainability Gakunga, Environmental Services Manager France, Senior Project Coordinator Kurz, Senior Recycling Specialist Medrano, Conservation Specialist I Corrales, Conservation Specialist I Coleman and Administrative Secretary Lindsey APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Chair Valen moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting on August 14, 2017, with one correction. The correction being to insert the correct number of Yes votes for the "Approval of Minutes" from 5 to 4. The motion was seconded by Commissioner McMillin and carried with the following vote: Yes — 6 Kappes, Matthias, McMillin, Mora, Romo and Valen No -0 Abstain — 0 PUBLIC COMMENTS none INFORMATION ITEMS 1. Community Garden Policy and Urban Agriculture Update Senior Project Coordinator Kurz updated the commission on these policies 2. FREBE Program Conservation Specialist I Corrales gave a presentation about the FREBE program and how it relates to the CLEAN Business Program. ACTION ITEMS none ACTIVITY REPORT none Page I of'2 Sustainability Commission Mimdes STAFF COMMENTS Senior Recycling Specialist Medrano talked about the Zero Waste workshops and the fixit clinics that are included with each workshop. He reported on the Prescription Drug Take Back event held on October 28, 2017..He also reported that CalRecycle's new policies concerning the handling of organic waste will come out on January 1, 2018. Environmental Services Manager France reflected on her time as a staff liaison to the Sustainability Commission (formerly called the Resource Conservation Commission). After 14 years with the City of Chula Vista, she will be retiring on December 7, 2017. Chief Sustainability Officer Gakunga provided information about the Smart Cities and Sustainability workshop to be held on November 30, 2017. COMMISSIONERS' COMMENTS Commissioner Matthias reported on the BCDC (Bayfront Cultural Design Committee) meeting she attended. Commissioner Romo reported that he will be attending the Measure P Citizen Oversight Committee on November 27, 2017. Commissioner Mora welcomed new commissioners Matthias and McMillin to the commission. Commissioner Kappes congratulated Environmental Services Manager France on her accomplishments during the time she worked for the City of Chula Vista and on her retirement. CHAIR'S COMMENTS Chair Valen reported about the upcoming WAG (Wildlife Advisory Group) meeting he will be attending. He congratulated Lynn on her retirement.
