HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-10-09 CAC MinutesMINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA October 9, 2017 Call to Order 6:01pm CALL TO ORDER ROLL CALL: Civic Center Building A Conference Room C 1 O 1 276 Fourth Avenue, Chula Vista 91910 PRESENT: Chair Cazares, Vice Chair Rodriguez, Commissioners Daniels, Delgado (6:07pm), Gray, Gore, Maynard, Penunuri, Sywyj CONSENT CALENDAR The Board/Commission will enact the Consent Calendar staff recommendations by one motion, without discussion, unless a Board/Commission Member, a member of the public, or staff requests that an item be removed for discussion. If you wish to speak on one of these items, please fill out a "Request to Speak" form and submit it to the Secretary prior to the meeting. Items pulled f°om the Consent Calendar will be discussed immediate ly,follow ing the Consent Calendar. 1. Declaration of excused/unexcused absenteeism September 11, 2017 Chair Cazares Commissioner Sywyj Discussion - NONE Motion to accept the requests to excuse made by Commissioner Daniels, seconded by Commissioner Gray. The motion passed unanimously. 2. Approval of minutes September 11, 2017 Discussion- NONE Motion to approve the minutes was made by Commissioner Sywyj, seconded by Commissioner Gore. The motion passed unanimously PUBLIC COMMENTS Angie Orozco, community member, interested in volunteering at cultural arts events. Tommy Ramirez, MAAC Charter School, Community Director Provided information on the charter school, and the Kings of Style and Battlegroundz, Graffiti Art events that will be held November 4"' and April 28"'. Proceeds will go to the bus pass program to assist student school attendance. ACTION ITEMS) 3. Cultural Arts Connnission Subcommittees Assignments and Tasks - Lynette Tessitore; Cultural Arts Manager Discussion - Ms. Tessitore reviewed subcomittees and the assigned commissioners. The commission discussed what subcommittees the new commissioners would like to sit on. The intention of the subcommittees are working meetings to assist staff in implementing CAMP Work Program tasks. The Subcommittees members were discussed as follows: Cultural Arts Assets Mapping — Commissioner Rodriguez and Commissioner Penunuri Funding and Grants — Commissioner Cazares and Commissioner Sywyj Promotions and Outreach — Commissioner Daniels, Commissioner Delgado, and Commissioner Gray Public Art — Commissioner Gore and Commissioner Maynard Motion to accept subcommittees as discussed was made by Commissioner Gore and Seconded by Commissioner Maynard. The motion passed unanimously. OTHER BUSINESS 4. STAFF COMMENTS Upcoming Events: Lit on Third — Commissioner Delgado, Commissioner Gray, and Chair Cazares stated that they would volunteer for the entire event 4pm — 9pm. CVAG Exhibition — At South library branch October 7 -October 28"' Reception will be held October 14"', from 2pm -4pm. All are welcome. Small Business BootCamp — Ms. Tessitore sent information to Commission and always contact list for Cultural Arts. She stated the hope to hold a similar forum for creative entrepreneurs in the future. Aging Creatively Program — Classes have begun. Ms. Tessitore presented flyers and asked that the Commissioners to promote the classes. Starlight Parade — Commissioner Gray volunteered to sit on the parade judging panel Page 2 1 Cultural Arts Commission October 9, 2017 5. CHAIR'S COMMENTS Chair Cazares discussed the need for commissioners to attend events, especially PVAG events, whenever possible. She also gave an overview of the Public Safety Council presentation. 6. COMMISSIONERS' COMMENTS Commissioner Gray stated that she is collecting items for the Chula Vista residents affected by the most recent house fire. She stated that is the family of one of her students and they lost everything. She will send list of items needed to Ms. Tessitore to send to the Commission. Commissioner Delgado stated that she is working with a group of student musicians to hold a concert at Friendship Park with the message that music unites. Ms. Tessitore will send her contact info for Mainly Mozart which hosts an exchange program between Tijuana and San Diego. Commissioner Rodriguez asked if anyone was available to judge an art exhibition at Eastlake High the following evening. Commissioner Gore had some marketing ideas and was asked to send info to Ms. Tessitore for consideration by the promotions and marketing subcommittee.
