!+ Meeting Minutes
Relations Wednesday, January 10, 2001, 5:15 p.m.
Commission Public Services Building, Conf. Room 1
1. Roll Call
The meeting was called to order at 1747 hours by Chair Pina with the following Commission
members present: Anthony Jemison, Virgil Pina, Fred Tinker and Jeff Scott
Staff Present: Joyce Sculark
Capt. Leonard Miranda arrived after the meeting began.
2. Declaration of excused/unexcused absences
Pina declared an excused absence for Commissioner Michael Palomo and the commission will wait
to see if Commissioner Avalos will show at this meeting before declaring his absence unexcused at
the next meeting.
3. Approval of minutes
Minutes from 11/8/00 and 09/13/00 were approved and acknowledged by Chair Pina.

None
5. Old Business
A. Civic Award for Volunteers/Organizations Update
This item will be tabled at the next meeting, due to the absence of Commissioner Palomo.
B. CAHRO Annual Conference Update
Commissioners Pina and Palomo will be attending the California Association of Human Relations
Organizations Annual Conference, to be held March 1 thru 3 2001, at the Cathedral Hill Hotel in
IsSan Francisco at their own expense.
C. Human Relations Essay Contest Update
Commissioner Pina will write an announcement letter to be sent to all the schools, public and
private, in Chula Vista. Commissioner Jemison will write the criteria for the essay. Commissioner
Scott will submit a list of schools for distribution of the announcement and criteria letter.
Commissioner Tinker will find individuals to be judges. The topic of the essay will be to the effect
of "My responsibility to my fellowman and community." Some ideas for the criteria of the contest
will be:
❖ Have the contest published in the newspapers
❖ Applicants are to have no relations with the commission or commissioners
❖ There will be a first, second and third place winners from the high school and first,
second and third place winners from the junior high school
❖ Recipients to receive first place $50, second place $25 and third place a certificate,
providing there are no additional contributions made.
❖ Judges will be done by an individual panel, with the Human Relations Commission as the
final judge
❖ Length of the essay maximum of 300 to 500 words
❖ Two first place winners will read essay at City Council meeting
6. New Business
A. Goals for 2001
Listed below are some possible ideas of goals for 2001.
❖ Commission to be more visible, i.e., Essay Contest
❖ Full Membership
❖ Bus Routes and services to be improved
❖ Citizen Review Board
❖ Casual dinner for Commission
7. Other Business
A. Written Correspondence
Agendas and minutes from MTDB November, December and January meetings were distributed.
B. Commission Comments
Capt. Miranda stated a Sergeant has been appointed for Police Community Relation and will
attend a future meeting. n
C. Adiournment
Chair Pina adjourned the meeting at 1927 hours, until the next scheduleeeting on February
