Wednesday, August 8, 2001, 5:15 p.m.
Public Services Building, Conf. Room 1
1. Roll Call
The meeting was called to order at 1730 hours by Chair Pina with the following Commission
members present: Anthony Jemison, Virgil Pina, Michael Palomo and Samuel Avalos.
Staff Present: Capt. Leonard Miranda and Joyce Sculark
2. Declaration of excused/unexcused absences
None
3. Approval of minutes
Motion to approve minutes from 01/10/01 was M/S/C (Jemison/Palomo).
4. Public Remarks
None
5. Old Business
A. Civic Award for Volunteers/Organizations Update
This item will be tabled at the next meeting.
B. Commission's Dinner Update
Commissioner Pina suggests the Commission come together for a casual dinner tentatively
scheduled for 09/22/01 to fellowship and welcome new members to the commission. Time and
place to be set at the next meeting 09/12/01. Staff, spouses, significant others and children of the
commission are welcome.
C. Human Relations Essay Contest Update
This item will be tabled at the next meeting.
6. New Business
A. Commendation letter to,Chula Vista Adult School
This item will be tabled at the next meeting.
B. Commendation letter to Chula Vista Transit
It was M/S/C (Jemison/Avalos) to make recommendations for City Council to accept and approve
a letter of commendation to Chula Vista Transit on behalf of the Commission.
C. Appreciation plaque and letter for former Commission Members
It was M/S/C (Pins/Palomo) to present former Commissioner Jeff Scott a plaque for his length of
service to the Commission and a letter of appreciation to former Commissioner Fred Tinker for
serving on the Commission. This presentation will be during the Commission's dinner tentatively
set for 09/22/01.
7. Other Business
A. Written Correspondence
Incoming mail was distributed.
B. Commissioner's Comments
❖ Commissioner Pina related the City has hired a consultation firm to assess to see if and
what kind of Citizen Review Board is needed for the City. Capt. Miranda indicated that
Sgt. Eisenberg of the Community Relations Division of the police department is working
with a consultant brought in on behalf of the City Managers Office to evaluate a Citizen
• Review Board and other community relation issues.
❖ Commissioner Pina inquired on the traffic stops survey. Capt. Miranda informed the
Commission that data is still being gathered and analyzed. The Commission may want to
invite Lt. Wedge to attend a meeting regarding racial profiling information.
C. Adjournment `
It was M/S/C (Pins/Palomo) to adjourn the meeting at 1815 hours, until t next scheduled
meeting on September 12, 2001.
