Roll Call The meeting was called to order at 1737 hours by Chair Pina with the following Commission members present: Anthony Jemison, Edna Concepcion, Michael Palomo and Virgil Pina. Member absent: Samuel Avalos Staff Present: Capt. Leonard Miranda and Joyce Sculark 2. Declaration of excused/unexcused absences None 3. Approval of minutes Motion to approve minutes from 11/14/01 was M/S/C (Jemison/Pina). 4. Public Remarks None 5. Old Business A. Human Relations Essay Contest Update Chairman Pina has asked the ASB Director of Sweetwater School District, Mr. Riley, to distribute the criteria and application to all high schools in Chula Vista. The deadline has been extended to 05/06/02. The Star News will be notified for publication of the contest. B. 30th Annual Robert B. Botterman Humanitarian Award The commission unanimously voted, and Roy & Aiko Muraoka is the winner of the award. C. Civic Award for Volunteers/Organizations The date and time of 02/26/02 @ 6:00 p.m. was set to go before the City Council to present the • criteria of the award. Chairman Pina will notify the Mayor's Office on 02/14/02 and then notify the commissioners on 02/15/02 to confirm. The commissioners unanimously decided that the commissioners could participate in the nomination, but sustain from voting on their nomination. D. CAHRO (California Association of Human Relation Organizations) It was unanimously decided for the commission to become a member of the CAHRO. Chairman Pina spoke with the Director of CAHRO regarding the possibility of the HRC to sponsor a symposium in Chula Vista. 6. New Business A. South County Diversity Symposium It was unanimously decided by the commission to entertain the idea to the City Council of hosting a diversity symposium. The goal of the symposium is to enhance and embrace words of encouragement on diversity in the South Bay area. Research will be done on date, time, cost, location, speakers, catering, etc. 7. Other Business A. Writteri Correspondence EI Latino Press B. Commissioners Comments ❖ Commissioner Pina noted the appointment dates of commissioners for the purposes of receiving a time -term plaque.
