Roll Call The meeting was called to order at 1845 hours by Chair Pina with the following Commission members present: Virgil Pina, Edna Concepcion, Anthony Jemison and Samuel Avalos. Staff present. Joyce Sculark and Capt. Miranda. Guests: Public Forum 2. Declaration of excusedlunexcused absences None 3. Approval of minutes None 4. Public Remarks This meeting was conducted as a community forum discussing issues regarding the Human Relations Commission; the purpose and intent of the commission; likes and dislikes of the city; concerns from citizens; etc. The citizens conveyed why the like the City of Chula Vista. Some items were the Libraries, their church, their community and how the crime rate is not as high as the adjoining cities. A citizen voiced her concern of customer service she is experiencing at the South Bay Courthouse. She was referred to the appropriate individual for her issue at hand. One citizen expressed interest of becoming a member of the commission. An application will be mailed to him. There was a drawing for raffle prizes; gift cards to Wal-Mart and gift certificates .to Red Lobster. 5. Old Business . A. Botterman Humanitarian of the Year Award Update Advertisement for the award is to be announced in the Star News. Nominations will be accepted until a deadline date is decided. Links are now available on the website of the commission for the award. Applications can be submitted electronically also. B. Civic Award Update City Council has approved the criteria of the award. Nominations are being accepted. 6. New Business A. Former Commissioner Mary Slovinsky A signed card will be sent to the bereaved family on behalf of the commission. B. New Chairperson of Commission A unanimous decision was made to vote for a new chairperson of the commission at the November meeting. %A 7. Other Business A. Written Correspondence A copy of the City of Oceanside HRC September 2002 meeting minutes was distributed. B. Commissioners' Comments ❖ Commissioner Pina will resign in December as a member of the commission. Pina wrote a letter to the City Council regarding shelter for the homeless. C.
