Roll Call The meeting was called to order at 1745 hours by Chairman Jemison with the following commission members present: Edna Concepcion, Michael Palomo, Joe Sims and Anthony Jemison. Members Absent: Sam Avalos (excused) and Juan Celaya Staff present: Joyce Sculark and Capt. Miranda 2. Declaration of Excused/Unexcused Absences None 3. Approval of Minutes It was MSC (Palomo/Concepcion) for February 12, 2003 meeting minutes be accepted and stand approved as received. 4. Public Remarks Andrew Kennerly attended the meeting for observation to get involved in the community. 6. Welcome New Member Newly appointed Commissioner Joe Sims introduced himself to the commission. The commissioners welcomed new member Joe Sims. 6. Old Business A. Recognition of Musical Group POD • It was MSC (Palomo/Concepcion) that this item be tabled until next meeting. B. Human Relations Commission Civic Award Update The presentation of the Civic Award to Mr. Ruben Castaneda has been calendared for 05/27/03 City Council Meeting. 7. New Business A. Essay Contest Update It was MSC (Palomo/Sims) to adopt "In A Changing World, Where Does Our Community Go From Here" for the theme of the 2003 Essay Contest. It was MSC (Palomo/Concepcion) to accept 05/23/03 as the deadline date to submit essays; 06/02/03 commissioners will submit their selections and 06/17/03 to calendar presentation for City Council meeting. Commission Palomo will notify the school district as soon as possible. B. Selection of Chairperson for Botterman's Award (Fall 2003) Edna Concepcion was selected to chair. the.Annual Botterman's Award Committee. 8. Other Business A. Written Correspondence A copy of the City of Oceanside Community Relations Commission March 2003 meeting minutes was distributed. ' • B. Commissioners' Comments ❖ Commissioner Jemison again welcomed new member Joe Sims. If anyone is interested in reading the minutes from the City Council meetings, he has copies of each meeting. C. Administrative Staff Comments Secretary Joyce Sculark announced she would only be able to attend the first hour of each meeting for the next ten weeks. D.
