PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE 2 MEETING CALLED TO ORDER — 6:00 p.m. Human Resources Conference Room City Hall Building ROLL CALL — Stephen Arends E Carmen Fedje P , Agustive Hermes, Jr. P , William Poindexter P , Robert White E , A.Y. Casillas P , Stephen Millikin P Mr. Fedje, Vice Chair, is leading the meeting in the absence of Chair Arends. 4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - The minutes of May 15th were approved and accepted with modification of item 5c, a corrected copy was given to each commissioner. It was also noted that Mr. Casillas should be Excused from the April and May meetings, and not Absent. ACTION ITEMS 0 Unfinished Business a. Street Names The commissioners reviewed the enclosed article in the June 8`h edition of the Star News regarding Sgt. Biernacki. The City of Chula Vista recently honored Sgt. Biernacki by naming a street in the Sunbow community in his honor. Vice -Chair Fedje advised the commissioners that street #54 in the Sunbow community will be named in honor of Bill Ayers, b. Veterans Memorial in Rolling Hills Ranch Vice -Chair Fedje reported that the Parks and Recreation Commission has not advised us yet of a meeting re the Veterans Memorial in the park. Chair Arends will speak with Mary Hofmockel upon his return. The Commissioners then discussed their concerns regarding this issue. c. Chula Vista Veterans Home Support Foundation Update Vice -Chair Fedje announced that Commissioner Steve Arends is now President of the Foundation, Nancy Owens is Vice President, Commissioner Steve Millikin is Secretary, and Mike Mazlak (President and CEO of North Island Federal Credit Union) is Treasurer. He also informed the commissioners that the cash donations received so far amount to $23,000. He will provide copies of the new Wish List at the next meeting. The vice chair also announced that Nancy Owens was recommended to the Governor for an appointment to the California Veterans Board. Mr. Millikin brought the commissioners up to date on the activities of the Foundation and their goals. There were several . suggestions expressed. There was also discussion about the Foundation's push to increase their fundraising efforts 1 d. Veterans Home Update 41 Vice Chair Fedje updated the commissioners on the status of the residents at the Veterans Home. There are currently 192 residents. 142 of those residents are in independent living, and 50 are in assisted living. There is still a delay regarding the cerification, but the latest is that October will be the soonest the Skilled Nursing Facility can open. The San Diego Union Tribune issues Orchid and Onion Awards for best and worst architectural designs in San Diego County. It is reported that Chair Arends nominated and submitted the Veterans Home of Chula Vista for a Orchid award. Results will be forthcoming. e. Veteran of the Year Award The Summer issue of the SPOTLIGHT has been mailed to residents with the City utility bills. A copy is included with the minutes to the Commissioners, and the section mentioning the Veteran of the Year is highlighted. Applications will be located at the front counter of the police department. It was suggested that the nominating parties of previous years' nominees be reminded that they may re -submit previous applicants or new applications. f. Goals and Objectives In the absence of Chair Arends the Commissioners perused the Summary of Activities, which was submitted to the City Clerk's Office, and commented on how detailed and thorough the report was. Kudos to Steve for his hard work and continued dedication to veterans. g. Legislative Reports No new information. . ih. Oral History Mr. Poindexter had no new information to report. 6. COMMUNICATIONS CHAIR'S COMMENTS - Vice Chair Fedje • All information that Chair Arends left with the vice chair has been reviewed. Vice Chair Fedje also shared information he had regarding D -Day veterans being eligible for a special medal which they must apply for.
