PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
MEETING CALLED TO ORDER — 6:00 p.m.

Guests: Trevor Angood, Eastlake High School
Mr. Arends opened the meeting by thanking Mr. Fedje for chairing the meeting last month in his absence.
4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - The minutes of June19th were approved and accepted with dates corrected where
required.
5. ACTION ITEMS
• Unfinished Business
a. Street Names
Mr. Arends will pursue the email he received from Diana Vargas of the Planning Department last month to discuss street names
and naming of parks. Mr. White attempted to reach the department to act in Mr. Arends absence, however neither
commissions received a response. Captain Dyke will try to get in touch with Diana Vargas.
Trevor Angood, student in charge of the street name research project, designed a website to include the biographies of the
deceased war veterans. The feedback that Chair Arends received is that everyone that has been to the website really (likes it.
Trevor reported on the feedback that he was receiving. Once all the information is gathered it will be on display at the
Veterans Home and also archived in the Planning Department. It has also been suggested that the work be displayed at the
City Library.
Public recognition for the research project team will be acknowledged with a City proclamation at a City Council Meeting to be
scheduled.
b. Veterans Memorial in Rolling Hills Ranch
Vice Chair Fedje has maintained contact with the Parks and Recreation Commission and their next meeting will be on
Thursday, July 191h. Mr. Arends will attend this meeting.
Addendum to this item:
On July 19`h, Mr. Arends and Mr. Fedje attended the monthly meeting of the Chula Vista Parks and Recreation Commission.
An email with the results of their meeting was sent to each commissioner. Mr. Fedje's copy was mailed to him and a copy of
the email is retained in the file.
After an abbreviated meeting on Tuesday, August 21 s` the commissioners will proceed to the Veterans Home to look at a site
for the Veterans Memorial for the deceased war veterans whose names are on the streets in the neighborhood.

c. Chula Vista Veteran's Home Support Foundation Update
Chair Arends spoke with the City Manager in Del Mar who made a donation of grant funds to the Foundation. Other than the
City of Chula Vista, Del Mar was the only city that pledged a donation
The next Foundation meeting will be held on Thursday, August 30`h at noon at the Veterans Home.
d. Veterans Home Update
Mr. Hermes spoke with Tom Arnold of the Veterans Home and advised the commissioners that that the Veterans Home has the
maximum amount of residents they can house until certification. can be completed. Barstow is still not certified.
e. Veteran of the Year Award
The commissioners have decided to handle the Veteran of the Year Award the same as last year with the same commissioners
serving on the committee to review the applications.
f. Goals and Objectives
Continue the Commission. It should be noted that this Commission is dedicated and continually has a quorum.
g. Legislative Reports
Chair Arends received the latest report but has *not been able to review it. The commissioners were reminded that this
information is available on-line. A brief discussion of pending legislative items affecting Chula Vista followed.
• h. Oral History
Mr. Poindexter reported that this item is at a standstill until school is in session again.
h. Term Limitations
This item was not on the agenda. It has been determined that Chair Arends has completed his term on the commission. There
was a detailed discussion to understand how lengths of the terms are interpreted. Mr. Fedje chose to step down as vice chair,
and Mr. Hermes agreed to fill the vice chair position. It was moved and seconded that Mr. Arends continue as Chair until a
qualified successor is appointed, and Mr. Hermes become Vice Chair. Mr. Arends has agreed to serve as Chair until the
Mayor and City Council appoint a replacement. Trudi has attached a copy of Veterans Advisory Commission's Municipal Code
with highlighted specifics..
6. COMMUNICATIONS
CHAIR'S COMMENTS
Chair Arends thanked Vice -Chair Fedje for serving during the past year. He also stated that he would pursue
recognition for the project that Trevor Angood and the Eastlake High School students worked on.
COMMISSIONERS COMMENTS
Mr. Millikin suggested that it was time for the next meeting to be held at the Veterans Home. Chair Arends will
contact Tom Arnold to schedule the September meeting at the Home. It was suggested by the commissioners
that the officers of the American Legion, VFW, and other organizations to attend the September meeting..
• Mr. Hermes reported that asbestos testing (for veterans) will be available again soon.

Trudi distributed a copy of the Attendance Record required by the City Clerk at the end of the fiscal year.
