a. Street Names
Mr. Arends and Mr. White attended a meeting in the Planning Department on August 71" to discuss the street name project
which will be continued, and hopefully in other areas of Chula Vista as new communities are developed. Mr. Arends sent the
Mayor and City Council a letter requesting guidance and funding for the monument or electronic kiosk, etc. to recognize the 51
deceased war veterans that the streets are named for. The letter also went to Andy Campbell, Director of Parks and
Recreation for action. Mr. Arends spoke with Mr. Campbell on 8/21 to find out if any action had been taken on the letter. The
Planning Department, Police Department, Fire Department and everyone else, voted to change the northern end of Davies
Street to be called Ayers Court or Bill Ayers Court. This would be the short street adjacent to the 10 acres allocated for
Veterans Park.
The Commissioners held a discussion to give Andy Campbell one or two alternatives of the type of memorial/monument/kiosk
that will be selected to recognize the deceased war veterans.in the vicinity of the 53 streets so that Parks Department can
present the request to the Mayor and proceed. The Commissioners unanimously agreed on a yet -to -be designed permanent
monument, small in size that could be placed in the Veterans Park. This proposal will then be forwarded to Andy Campbell who
will then craft a proposal that he will take back to the City Council for approval.
Commissioner Millikin suggested that the "Commission support a resolution that would establish a memorial in the soon -to -be -
named Veterans Park, a small plaque that describes the nature of the naming of the streets in the local area and perhaps
suggest to people that they might find additional information on an electronic source." It was unanimously seconded by all
the commissioners present. It was also unanimously voted that Commissioner Millikin's proposal be relayed to Andy Campbell
immediately.
Trevor Angood, the student coordinator for the street name project updated the Commissioners. He is beginning his senior
year in high school and will remain with the project for another year. The total number Trevor has completed on his web site is
17 biographies.
