4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - The minutes of September 16, 2001 were approved and accepted with corrections..
5. ACTION ITEMS
0 a. Election of a New Chair
This item was deferred for the next month's meeting. Mr. Raskin was to be sworn in as new commissioner prior to this
meeting, but due to unforeseen circumstances he was unable to be present.
Unfinished Business
a. Street Names
Eastlake project is continuing. Trevor and his team are still participating.
Amy Oakes of the Union Tribune doing follow-up story this week.
There are currently 51 streets named.
b. Veterans Memorial
Four additional names were added to the Memorial, completed on 9/6/01. Design for parks on City Council agenda on
9/18/01. Trevor Angood will be meeting with students who are working on Phase II. He has been asked to write an article
for the Star News regarding the project.
c. Chula Vista Veterans Home Support Foundation Update
The Inaugural Charity Golf Tournament will take place on Veterans Day, November 121 It will be a major fundraising
event for the Foundation. Prizes will be awarded for various events. The next Foundation meeting will be held in the
middle of November, after the tournament.
d. Veterans Home Update
As of the date of this meeting, the Veterans Home has 203 residents (135 from World War II, 42 from the Korean War, and
24 Vietnam War veterans). The skilled nursing facility is not yet accredited, and the Commission has made
recommendations to the Mayor and Council regarding the ongoing delays in opening the facility.

e. Veteran of the Year Award

•The Commissioners made a unanimous selection for Veteran of the Year. A letter was sent to the Mayor from Vice Chair
Hermes with the name of the nominee.
f. Goals and Objectives
Continue to advise and make recommendations to the City Council regarding veterans concerns, and on matters which the
Board has special knowledge and expertise. Elect new chair for the Commission.
g. Legislative Reports
Chair Arends and Commissioner White are receiving the legislative updates.
Recommendations were sent to Governor Davis regarding AB -540 which addresses discounts on college tuition fees for
students of military families.
h. Oral History
Mr. Poindexter reported that he was awaiting a call from Jerry Rindone.

Reminded Commissioners of upcoming Fleet Week parade, also of the Saturday event at the Veterans Home.
