MEETING CALLED TO ORDER — 6:01 p.m. Human Resources Conference Room City Hall Building 3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - Motion was made and seconded for approval of May Minutes with corrections. 5. ACTION ITEMS Out of Order for this meeting: The ratification of Bobby Price will take place this evening at the City Council meeting. Mr. Price will replace Mr. Arends on the Commission. Mr. Arends suggested that Mr. Price be sworn in on July 16"' prior to • the Commission's monthly meeting, and Mr. Price stated that the date was good for him Unfinished Business a. Street Names Chair Arends reported on the article in the Heritage Press (The Voice of the San Diego Jewish Community since 1914) specifically the article by Eileen Schwartz. Copies are attached. Announced the graduation of Trevor Angood from Eastlake High School on Friday, June 215` at 10 a.m. at Southwestern College. He will be going on to the University of Michigan. The faculty and students at Eastlake High plan to continue with the street naming project to try to get all 118 histories done. Trevor's younger sister will also participate in this project. Trevor has promised to submit paper copies of the biographies that he has. It is hoped that the website that Trevor created will be maintained in his absence. Trevor plans to attend the July meeting, which will be his last prior to going on to college. Nothing new to report on Ayers Ct (end of Davies Drive) No acknowledgment of a letter submitted a year ago requesting recognition of Bill Ayer*s: b. Veterans Park Chair Arends thanked Mr. Poindexter for getting the signatures of the commissioners on the letter to the Mayor and members of the City Council urging them to name Veterans Park "Veterans Park" and to be proactive in making sure the City retains the 10 acre park for Veterans Park. Chair Arends hand -delivered the letter and it was distributed to all concerned. • The Veterans briefly discussed attending the Park and Recreation Committee meeting when this issue is on their agenda. 1 C. Chula Vista Veterans Home Support Foundation Update The Second Annual Benefit Golf Tournament will be at the Auld course. After changing the date a few times, Mr. Arends believes that it will be held on the Friday before Veterans Day, November 8, 2002. Scott Alvey and Mike Maslak will again • be co-chairs. More information will follow in upcoming minutes. Chair Arends advised the commissioners that despite promises received from Supervisor Greg Cox, the Foundation did NOT receive the $10,000 Community Enhancement Grant, however the County of San Diego awarded funds to the Foundation for the Hobby Shop. Also received donation for $1,000 from the Naval Officers Spouses Club. The City of Chula Vista awarded $2,000 to the Foundation. The next quarterly Board of Directors Meeting is scheduled to be held on Thursday, June 20th at noon at the Veterans Home. Because of other commitments, many members will not be able to attend but it is hopeful that the meeting will still be held. Mr. Arends reported that he is stepping down as President of the Foundation. Commissioner Millikin has agreed to stay on as Secretary, Vice President Nancy Owen has agreed to stay on, and Mike Mazlak has also committed to stay on as Treasurer. Commissioner Bob White has-been asked to consider serving as President of the Foundation. More volunteers are needed at the Veterans Home. Mr. Arends advised that when talking to neighbors and friends; try to get them to volunteer at the Veterans Home. The need is great for all kinds of assistance. Mr. Hermes mentioned that he would talk to the members of the Fleet Reserve who may be interested. Contact Dee Cruz at the Veterans Home, who is Director of Volunteer Services, for further information. d. Veterans Home Update The Second Annual Birthday Celebration at the Veterans Home brought a good turn out. Food was excellent and all had a good time. •Mr. Arends reported through Director Tom Arnold and Dan Murray, head of the Skilled Nursing Facility, that the Skilled Nursing Facility is still being held at 13 residents. Work still needs to be done to complete the certification so that the facility may be able to work to capacity. Mr. Millikin proposed that we have the next Commission meeting at the Veterans Home. It was originally agreed to do this, however, the commissioners wished to attend the City Council meeting on July 1611 when new Commissioner, Bobby Price, takes the oath of office. The Veterans Advisory Commission will have its August 20th meeting at the Veterans Home. Please note on your calendar. It was duly noted that no response has been received from letters sent to the developers last month. e. Veteran of the Year Update The Commissioners discussed the selection process for the Veterans of the Year, and agreed that past nominees could be nominated again by having their applications updated. f. Goals and Objectives None. The Commissioners will proceed over to the Council Meeting for the ratification and approval of Bobby Price'as the newest commissioner. g. Legislative Reports Briefly discussed senate bills that have been "deleted" due to the ongoing budget deficit. . h. Oral History Mr. Poindexter did not attend the meeting tonight. Mr. Arends reported, in his absence and stated that Hilltop High was supposed to have begun videotaping or recording some of the Chula Vista residents for the project. �= 6. COMMUNICATIONS CHAIR'S COMMENTS Mr. Arends informed the commissioners of identity fraud and DD -214. A brief discussion followed. Mr. Arends also thanked Mr. Hermes and the members of Branch 61 of the Fleet Reserve for the meaningful, and patriotic services that were held at Glen Abbey on Memorial Day. He commented that it was extremely well done and there was a good turnout. Mr. Arends brought to the attention of the Commissions, the article on page 3 of the Star dews dated June 14th, "Chula Vista Celebrates Flag Day." All were invited to attend the VA's monthly Community Advisory Board meeting (third Wednesday of each month) at 9:30 a.m. at the Mission Valley VA office. Many issues are covered during these meetings; the big issues currently are medical care and the VA Hospital's (La Jolla) budget cut. COMMISSIONERS COMMENTS Mr. Hermes advised that all would be receiving an invitation to the 100`h birthday party of Carolyn Heisler, a charter member of Unit 61 of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association. Since it was requested that no gifts be given, Mr. Hermes is making a donation to the Vetetans Foundation in her name from the Commission and invited others to join him. STAFF COMMENTS Trudi announced that Capt. Dyke extended an invitation for lunch to the Commissioners in honor of Steve Arends' service to the commission. The Commissioners graciously accepted. PUBLIC COMMENTS None 7.
