4. ACTION ITEMS
Unfinished Business
a. Street Names
Mr. Arends reported no response from the developers on 5/21/02. Captain Dyke was asked to intervene on behalf of the
Commission. The project is spreading throughout the County with Chula Vista being the model.
b. Veterans Park
No Parks & Recreation meeting in July. Veterans Park not on August agenda, may be on September 19' agenda.
Veterans Memorial Gardens being designed for Balboa Park. Copies of plans to be forthcoming at a later date
c. Chula Vista Veterans Home Support Foundation Update
Mr. White, new Chair of the Chula Vista Veterans Home Support Foundation, updated the Commissioners on block grants,
donations, and the newly completed hobby shop. He also mentioned the Second Annual Benefit Golf Tournament to be
held on Friday, November 8 1 at the Auld course. Mr. White is currently attending the County United Veterans Commission
meetings. The most recent meeting was held on Saturday, August 2$1 at 9 a.m.
Out of Order for this meeting only:
• The Commission voted Bob White as its new Chair, and Steve Millikin as Vice Chair, effective immediately.
d. Veterans Home Update

d. Veterans Home Update
The Veterans Home passed inspection for its Skilled Nursing Facility unit on July 12, 2002 ,and is in the process of hiring
RNs, volunteers, etc. They are now accepting residents but will first be placing those who had been transferred to other
facilities.
Mr. Arends offered kudos to all the Veterans Home staff for their hard work regarding the certification process. The
certification has actually been received and is hanging in the lobby, per John Smith.
Mr. White spoke briefly about the upcoming Fleet Week at the Veterans Home. Mr. Arends will request funds for paying
for the Fleet Week event (festivities).
e. Veteran of the Year Update
The announcement for Chula Vista's Veteran of the Year will be announced after September 15".
f. Goals and Objectives
The goal of selecting a new Chair (Bob White) has been accomplished, along with a new Commissioner (Bobby Price).
Steve Millikin has been selected as Vice Chair.
g. Legislative Reports
Mr. Arends gave an update on Assembly Bill 2893, introduced by Assemblyman Howard Wayne, to create a veterans
cemetery on 25 acres of Glen Abbey.
h. Oral History
No report at this time.

Mr. Arends updated everyone on several veterans issues. See attachments. He also stepped down as Chair.

STAFF COMMENTS
Captain Dyke coordinating lunch for the Veterans Advisory Commission, to be announced, sometime in September.
PUBLIC COMMENTS
Mr. William Keith, Veterans Home resident, will contact all five developers to follow up on our VAC letters that were sent
5/21/02. Mr. Keith was given copies of all the letters.
