Thursday Afternoon, 3/29/01, 1:05 PM
Trudi, please sta le a copy of the e-mail I just sent you to the
April a ends ou'll be mailin ou s that e-mai to Lauren ei ner,
the Chair of the C u a Vista Parks & Rec Commission concerning the
Veterans Memorial we want to have built. Think it's worthwhile to let
all the VAC members know that Carmen and I met yesterday with the
Cultural Arts Commission, and we're trying our best to team-up with a
third Chula Vista Commission - the Parks & Recreation Commission.
Thought Ken ought to know, too, when he reads over your minutes and
agenda before they're mailed in April. Reminder: next meeting is at
the
Veterans Home, not City Hall.
Thanks, Trudi! All the best, Steve.

Subject: Veterans Memorial At Sunbow
Thursday Morning, 3/29/01, 11:55 AM
To: Ms. Lauren Weidner, Chair, Chula Vista Parks & Recreation _
Commission
Lauren, would appreciate your Park & Rec Commission's help.
Yesterday I attended a meeting at the Chula Vista Veterans Home with
members of the Chula Vista Veterans Advisory Commission (VAC) and the
Chula Vista Cultural Arts Commission. Our VAC Vice-Chair, Mr. Carmen
Fedje, was there as the head of the VAC'S Veteran Memorial Committee,
and
Mr. Matt Floch from the Cultural Arts Comm. For months we've worked
together trying to get action on the planning, site, and construction of
a permanent veterans memorial near the 53 city streets that are named in
honor of the deceased war veterans from Chula Vista. I suppose you saw
the article about the City's street naming project, and the memorial, in
the latest edition of the Chula Vista "Spotlight" newsletter.
As an update, Matt Floch recently met with Mayor Horton to
discuss the cultural aspects of this project. Mayor Horton and others
have suggested that instead of accepting the Veterans Home
Administrator's offer to place the veterans memorial at the entrance to
4the Veterans Home campus on East Naples Court, that the memorial be
placed in the new 10 acre city park in Sunbow. Matt Floch met last
Wednesday, 3/21/01, with Mr. John Krizan, a landscape architect from the
Chula Vista Parks & Rec Dept. John told Matt that a design contract
will
soon be signed to develop the planned city park off East Palomar Street
and Medical Center Ct/Dr. The members of the Chula Vista VAC and the
Cultural Arts Commission would like to work together with your
Commission
to create a three-commission initiative to site the deceased war veteran
memorial (with 53+ names of Chula Vista citizens) in the new Sunbow
park.
Has there been a formal name assigned to this new park that the City is
building with the help of the developer, Ayres Land Co.? As you recall,
our VAC has already gotten a verbal promise from the developer, Ayres
Land Co. , to help pay for the veteran memorial.
Please add this veterans memorial and this yet-unnamed City park
to your agenda for the next Parks & Rec Comm meeting. Can you invite
our
VAC and the Cultural Arts Comm to attend your meeting? You still meet
the 3rd Thursday of every month at 6:30 PM in the Parks & Rec offices?
Next meeting on 4/19/01? Our VAC meets the 3rd Tuesday of every month
at
6:00 PM. Our April 17th meeting will NOT be at its usual place, the
H.R.
Conference Room in City Hall. Instead, our April meeting is being held
at
the Chula Vista Veterans Home so the 186+ residents can participate in
our public meeting. You, and/or other members of the Parks' & Rec Comm
are cordially invited to our April VAC meeting.
Am optimistic that through teamwork, and dialogue among all
three
of our City Commissions, we'll be successful in getting a suitable
veterans memorial built in the Sunbow area to honor the Chula Vista
1
a
citizens who died for our country in combat. Related to that, have you
gotten confirmation from the Parks & Rec Dept that the missing four
names
have been engraved into the granite memorial in Memorial Park downtown?
Charlene Long had told me she'd let me know when the contractor finished
the engraving. Last time I checked, the names were not yet engraved.
If you prefer, Lauren, you can respond via phone. My home phone
is (619) 421-1521. Thank you for what you and your fellow commissioners
are doing to make Chula Vista an even finer place to live and work.
Regards, Commissioner Steve Arends, Chair, Chula Vista Veterans
Advisory Commission (VAC)
