PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE 2. MEETING CALLED TO ORDER — 6:00 p.m. ROLL CALL: Robert White P Stephen Millikin P A.Y. Casillas P , Carmen Fedje P , Agustive Hermes, Jr. P , William Poindexter P , Bobby Price P , Guests: Mr. Stephen Arends (former Veterans Advisory Commissioner) 3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The November minutes were approved as written. ACTION ITEMS Unfinished Business a. Veterans Park Chairman White advised that the area around Veterans Park is still being worked on, completing apartments and condo complex in the surrounding area, and will keep everyone posted. b. Street Names/Names for Bridges Mr. Millikin reported that there will be four bridges and it is yet to be determined if there will be more. Chairman White will send a copy of the listing to the commissioners. c. Proclamation Chairman White shared the beautiful proclamation awarded to the Chula Vista Veterans Advisory. Commission in appreciation to those who volunteered at the Otay Valley Regional Park. Captain Dyke will have the proclamation mounted for posterity in the City Hall Building. 'd. CWHSF Update The Second Annual Golf Tournament at the Auld Course at Rolling Hills took place on Monday, February 17". Chairman ( White was unable to attend. Commissioner Milikin reported that the tournament was a success, and that almost everyone who signed up to attend in November (which was postponed) participated in this event. He stated that an account of the proceeds would be presented at the next CWHSF meeting. A discussion followed on other donations to the Foundation. Former Chair of the Veterans Advisory Commission, Mr. Arends, advised the commissioners of a verbal pledge from the Commander in Chief of the VFW when he visited Post 2111. An amount of $2,000.00 was pledged from the National VFW 1 for the Golden Age Games. Mr. Arends also advised that there is an ongoing and increasing need for activities money, and donations will continue to be solicited. 16 e. Veterans Home Update Chairman White reported that Tom Arnold has been replaced by Dan Murray as the Administrator of the Veterans Home. Mr. White suggested that the Veterans Advisory Commission meet with Mr. Murray to show their support. Mr. White then advised everyone that according to John Smith there are 250+ residents. For Christmas, each resident received a check for $20.00 to use at Rite-Aid along with a 20% discount on all purchases, as well as a check for $10.00 for use at Albertson's. ' f. Chula Vista Agenda and Minutes Mr. White is now receiving the Chula Vista Agenda and Minutes in the mail, and anything that affects the veterans will promptly be brought to the attention of the Commissioners. g. Mr. Scott Burress Mr. Burress has contacted Mr. White regarding the bios. Mr. White has passed on all the information to Mr. Burress, including the 118 names. Mr. Burress will shortly be handing the work over to the students to complete as part of their curriculum. Mr. White will keep in contact with Mr. Burress. h. Veterans Memorial Registry Chairman White advised the Commissioners of the Veterans Memorial Registry Program he had seen online to register every memorial in the state. Mr. Arends reported that it was in the minutes last year that he had worked with Jeri Gulbransen's office. Trudi found a brief comment in the January 2002 minutes. Mr. White will research through the Public .Information Office and possibly resubmit if nothing is found. i. Legislative Reports None received for January. COMMUNICATIONS ►f= None CHAIR'S COMMENTS COMMISSIONERS COMMENTS STAFF COMMENTS PUBLIC COMMENTS Mr. Arends advised the Commissioners that the City of Fallbrook is planning to adopt Chula Vista's model program of naming new streets in honor of deceased war veterans. This program is receiving national and statewide recognition through the VFW. Prior to adjournment, the commissioners discussed the cemetery issue. Mr. White reported that 5.9 acres have been approved for Pt. Loma, but only for crematoriums to last for about 20 years. The land at Miramar is still being addressed, and Glen Abbey is said to be a dead issue.. 4.
