4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The March minutes were approved as written.
5. ACTION ITEMS
Unfinished Business
a. Corporal Erik H. Silva
Chairman White led a discussion that centered around whether Corporal Silva should be considered a resident of Chula
Vista. A motion was made and seconded that the Chula Vista Veterans Advisory Commission would not support Corporal
Silva as a resident of Chula Vista.
b. Cul de Sac Name
Chairman White advised of a new cul-de-sac just east of the new elementary school to be located at the corner of Paseo
Ladera and East Palomar. Since this cul-de-sac is part of the Sunbow community, it has been requested that we provide a
name for the cul-de-sac. The Veterans Advisory Commission selected the name of Veteran Brezar to submit to the
builder.
c. Mr. Scott Burress
Chairman White has had contact with Mr. Burress of Eastlake High School where the class voted to start on the
biographies the week of 4/20/03, after Spring Break.
d. Bridge Naming
Mr. Millikin reported that the bridges are all set to be named. The first one is completed, the second one is in the process
of being financed and building will begin soon. The third and fourth are most likely to be approved and built in the near
future. Mr. Millikin will also write a letter to the Planning Committee to propose other major walkways.

e. Veterans Proclamation and Rally
Kudos to Commissioner Bobby Price and VFW Post 2111 for the Rally to support our troops. It was very well done.

f. Memorial Day and Armed Forces Day
Commissioner Hermes informed the Commission that the guest speaker this year will be a Staff Sgt from the Marine
Corps. He also advised that a lot of events that have tradition are being discontinued due to the increasing number of
events that are taking place.
g. Veterans Park
Chairman White has been informed by Mr. Buck Martin that building should begin soon, with an estimated completion date
of April 2005. He was also informed that sod would be used instead to grass seed to accelerate the opening of the park.
h. Veterans Home Update
Mr. Dan Murray, new Director of the Chula Vista Veterans Home, updated the commissioners on the Barstow situation.
He stated that it was his goal to have the Skilled Nursing Facility filled by the end of the year. Most of the new entries to
the facility will be from Barstow. There are currently 111 veterans on the waiting list for the Skilled Nursing Facility
Mr. John Smith, Director of Public Relations at the Veterans Home advised the Commissioners that he had met with
Congresswoman Davis regarding veterans issues, and also of events that will be forthcoming, i.e., Jim Stodola's
retirement, etc.
Mr. Arends updated the commissioners on the street naming project taking place in Fallbrook.
i. Legislative Reports
Chairman White reported that the February 7h issue discussed AB -14, tax -payer contributions. Discussion followed
regarding signatures

Mr. Poindexter informed the Commissioners of a Retired Activities Offices that will help military families in need.

PUBLIC COMMENTS
Mr. Arends handed out copies of a letter that was sent to the residents of Barstow, explaining what is happening there.
All were given a copy of a letter from Assemblywoman Shirley Horton that was sent to Sacramento supporting AB -214 to
better the quality of life for veterans.
