CALL MEETING TO ORDER Chula Vista Veterans Home 600 East Naples Street 3. ROLL CALL RobertWhite P Stephen Millikin P , A.Y. Casillas P -,_Carmen Fedje P, Agustive Hermes, Jr. P William Poindexter P , Bobby Price P . Welcome: Karen Histed, Trudi's replacement was introduced to the Commissioners. It should be noted that per Trudi, Karen would soon be very comfortable and very competent in this new role. • 4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The April minutes were approved as written. 5. ACTION ITEMS Unfinished Business a. Corporal Erik H. Silva The Star News substantiated that Corporal Erik H. Silva was not a resident. This issue is now closed. b. Mr. Scott Burress Chairman White gave Mr. Burress of Eastlake High School some names of students after the students came back from break. c. Bridge Naming Mr. Millikin reported there have not been any additional changes since the last meeting. A letter has been sent for approval for the plan to name bridges and walkways. Otay is behind this plan and this should be approved. d. Memorial Day and Armed Forces Day This event will be celebrated on May 26th at Glen Abbey on Bonita Road. The speaker will be a former POW from the Pueblo. • e. Veterans Park The groundbreaking for the park is expected in November. The opening of the park will be approximately 2005. Mr. Martin has assured me we will be invited for any event involving the dedication of the Veterans Park. There has also been a 1 discussion of selling bricks with names engraved on them. Mr. Martin will be looking into the details for this project. f. Veterans Home Update 0 . ' There are currently 290 residents with four to five more a month coming in. The new wing is expected to open in July and should help relieve Barstow. g. CVVHSF Update The Naval Officer's Spousal Club sent a letter that approved $2,500 to help with the expansion of the multi-purpose room. There was also $10,000 received from Greg Cox, along with approval of a $3,5000 grant. They are still looking for hand tools for the woodworking project. On June 141' at 2 p.m., there will be a celebration and exhibit at the Veterans Home h. Legislative Reports AB -14 is still on the burner. i. Veteran of the Year. Mr. Casillas and Mr. Fedje will be responsible for reviewing the applications for the Veteran of the Year. 6. COMMUNICATIONS CHAIR'S COMMENTS '• COMMISSIONERS COMMENTS Mr. Hermes made a recommendation for prioritizing the street names. So far there have been ten names submitted. Mr. Hermes ends his term with the Commission on 6/30/03. Chairman White will check with the Mayor's office for any applications that could be reviewed. Mr. Millikin expressed interest in reviewing the applications also. Mr. Hermes was asked if he would be willing to stay on the committee and he graciously replied he would stay on until a replacement is made. STAFF COMMENTS Trudi contacted Jeri Gulbransen to request that info from the previous years be placed in the SPOTLIGHT. Jeri no longer works for the Office of Communication and forwarded the request to Liz Purcell and Diane Howell. Karen will follow up with Liz and Diane. PUBLIC COMMENTS None 7.
