VETERANS ADVISORY COMMISSION
CITY OF CHULA VISTA
MINUTES
August 17, 2004
TUESDAY, 6:00 P.M.

5. ACTION ITEMS
a. Commissioners Gene Pellerin was welcomed to the Veteran's Advisory Commission.
b. Bridge/Path and street naming: A list of the remaining 38 names was distributed. Commissioner White mentioned
the names marked in red can be,viewed on the Internet. Commissioner Millikin suggested a revision date be placed
on each updated list. There was a motion to include Brashear and Swiencicki on the list for street names and was
approved by the commission. Lisa Johnson indicated that she would make the bios available to the residents that
live on the streets named after the veterans.
Commissioner Millikin asked the commission if the; wording on the signs be different than the street signs in
Sunbow, i.e. last name, veteran of WWI than the word "deceased". He asked if the commission would prefer the
word "deceased" be omitted from the sign and the commission agreed.
c. Veteran of the Year: Deadline is September 10, 2004 to turn in applications. One application has been received.
Deadline possibly may be extended 1-2 weeks.
d. VFW Post 2111 "Walk for Vets" Commissioner Price not in. Allis well.
e. Veteran's Home Foundation update- Kiwanis La Jolla donated $500 to the foundation. General Atomics donated
$280 last month and will receive an estimated $140-200 every 6 weeks. Commissioner White applied for a grant
with SBC for a program called "accelerator." This will help in the computer labs at the Veteran's home. There are an
estimated 351 residents.
f. Mendez-Acevez- It was determined Mendez-Acevez, which was killed in the Iraqi war, was a resident of Chula
Vista. The commission motioned and passed to make Mendez-Acevez a candidate for listing in the Memorial Park.
g. Veterans Park- Commissioner White will meet with Buck Martin where the date will be established for the
groundbreaking of the park. Tentatively it is set for 9 or 10`h of September, depending on the Mayor's schedule.
Applications for the sale of the bricks have been distributed throughout the city.
h. Veteran's Bios- A list of the updated bios was distributed. It was suggested to include the website address on the
list.

COMISSIONERS COMMENTS.
Commissioner White spoke about the Veteran's Memorial Garden in Balboa Park. Gen. Cardenas is trying to raise
millions to place a B-24 (plane replica) in the Memorial park. This will be the air component in the Memorial park. There
I* will be a land, sea and air component.
