Commissioners Sherry Strothers and Captain Gene Pellerin were welcomed to the Veterans Advisory Commission. • 0 6. b. Bridge and Path Street Name: Commissioner Steve Millikin met with Lisa Johnson of McMillin and Carolyn Young of the Chula Vista Planning Department to discuss which Veterans names were used and which were allowed or not allowed. A list was composed of what names can be used from a list of available Veterans. Otay Ranch development, which is adjacent to the other development, will also continue with the same theme of using Veterans names. This development is two years away from being started. There are several names that cannot be used due to similarity in names. These names may be used to name pedestrian bridges or pathways leading to a bridge. c. Veteran's Bios: Commissioner Robert White distributed a list and explained that Veteran Schircliffe's bio was found. 107 veteran's biographies were found with the exception of Lambugh. Commissioner White contacted Sweetwater School District to check on transcripts for Veterans and was told to check on the individual schools. Koster and Wolsdorf will bed used as Korean Veterans on the street names. d Veterans Park: Commissioner White discussed taking pictures from different angles of the park and putting it on an Outlook presentation to show progress. Dedication is still set for Veteran's Day 2005. The "Walk of Honor" and the sale of the commemorative bricks was explained to the new commissioners. 37 bricks have been sold so far. Commissioner White is going to contact organizations to purchase bricks. e. Veteran of the Year: Commissioner Carmen Fedje stated that 2 applications were received. One was late and was not accepted. The two that were accepted were for Jack Mitchell and Robert White. Commissioner Fedje made a motion to nominate White for Veteran of the Year for 2004 and was approved by the board. A letter will be sent to the Mayor, f. VFW Post 2111 Walk for Vets: The "Walk for Vets" is scheduled for November 16, 2004 and will start at the Veteran's home. Sign-up will be at 8am and the start will be at 9am. This will be a downhill, 4 -mile walk, which will end in the parking lot of Post 2111. Last year $6,000 was raised and the goal for this year is $10,000. g. Veteran's Home Foundation: Commissioner White informed the board that there are currently 350 residents at the veteran's home. The launching of the pontoon boat is set for September 22, 2004 at 3:30 pm in J Street. There was a verbal okay for $5,000 from SBC for the Accelerator Program directed for the computer labs in the Veteran's Home. COMMUNICATIONS CHAIR'S COMMENTS Chairman Bobby Price received an email from Council member McCann last month regarding a memorial at the new 1 None • Civic Center when the center is completed. Price suggested a memorial for Desert storm/Iraqi freedom. A letter will be sent endorsing his proposal. Chairman Price asked the commissioners to send all the agenda items to him so he could forward them to the secretary. COMISSIONERS COMMENTS. Commissioner Carmen Fedje gave a farewell message to the commission. Commissioner Steve Millikin mentioned a luncheon will be held for Commissioner Fedje's departure.
