VETERANS ADVISORY COMMISSION

MINUTES
March 21, 2006

4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
ACTION ITEMS
• Steve Millikin Status. Bob White stated that Steve Millikin is presently in the hospital at Paradise Valley, and is due
to be released on Wednesday to his home. He has regained more movement in his legs and arms, and the steroid
drugs prescription is tapering off. He needs a walker to move, and tires rather quickly, but he is improving. His
hospital phone number is 470-4342.
• Veterans Park Dedication. Per Bob White, the Veterans Park Dedication (at E. Palomar) is scheduled for Armed
• Forces Day, May 20th at 10:00 am. Ms Victoria Tom and the Park Dept is soliciting inputs from the Chula Vista
Veterans Groups, plus JROTC, marching groups as well as static displays. More to come on this one.

• Street names. Bob White mentioned that the new street names in the McMillan community near the Veterans
Elementary School will go up in about two months. They will have the same colors, with the flag and say WWII
War Veteran, Korean War Veteran or Vietnam War Veteran.
• CWHSF Update Bob White stated that there are now 361 residents, and the CWHSF should receive $5000
from SBC for 10 laptop computers, and around $4500 from the CFC from last years campaign (money from both
should come in within the next two weeks). Home and CWHSF sponsoring 10 residents to go to the Golden
Games this summer in Virginia.
• CWHSF Golf Tourney: Bob White informed that the CWHSF Golf Tourney will be at Admiral Baker Course on
Monday, April 10 with a shotgun start at 1 pm. Registration is at 11 am. If you cannot play, a donation to help those
resident that can play would also be welcome.
• Veteran of the Year: AY Casillas stated that he contacted Star News and spoke to Carlos Davalos requesting Star
News to publish an article regarding Veteran of the Year. AY mentioned that he will check in May to see if Tri -City
Herald has resumed business again. AY made a motion to have the deadline for VOY applications to be received
by July 15th, 2006. Motion was moved and seconded by the board.
• HR4949: Bobby Price mentioned that the Military Retiree Healthcare Protection Act, HR 4949 is designed to
protect retirees from the Department of Defense raising fees whenever they like and placing those responsibilities
under purview of the Congress.

CHAIR'S COMMENTS
i bby Price mentioned that he received a response letter from Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger regarding the
ecommendation for Gilbert Acevedo for appointment in his administration. The Governor stated in the letter that Gilbert
Acevedo would receive full consideration.
COMISSIONERS COMMENTS.
Bridge Progress. Bob White added that if you drive down Olympic Parkway, you can see the rapid progress on the two
pedestrian bridges that will cross. They are near the Otay Lakes High School.
