CALL MEETING TO ORDER 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE 3. ROLL CALL Alex Galicia P Stephen Sprenkle P, John Acosta E, Virgil Whitehead P, Keith Blum P, Terry Jensen P Tony Stewart P 4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Terry Jensen made a motion to approve November minutes as written and was seconded by Stephen Sprenkle. The minutes were approved unanimously. ACTION ITEMS Veterans Activities Presentation -Virgil Whitehead (see attached). Veteran of the Year -More publicity is needed in order to receive more nomination applications for the Chula Vista Veteran of the Year. Tony Stewart and Virgil Whitehead will work on this project. Virgil Whitehead will submit information on the Veteran of the Year to the Star News. Tony Stewart will look into possibly setting up the application to be available online via the City of Chula Vista's website and also update the Veteran's Advisory Commission page on the city's website. Information will also be forwarded to other Chula Vista veteran organizations and to the city's PIO to be submitted to Nixie. • Veterans Home update -Virgil Whitehead stated there are currently 302 residents with 82 on the waiting list. The Christmas party was a success and had over 1000 attendees. Volunteers consisted of Marines from MCAS, Naval Hospital, VFW and Marine Corp League. Golf tournament is scheduled for May 02, 2013 at the Eastlake Golf Course. The golf tournament raises approximately $25,000 to support the Veterans Home. Golf club_ s are needed for the tournament. Volunteers for the event are also needed. • Southwestern College Procurement Policy -New president of Board of Trustees, Humberto Peraza recently met with Winston McCall, Director of Procurement with the County of San Diego. Mr. McCall donated his time to Southwestern College to ensure Southwestern College feels comfortable with what their promoting. The new controller at Southwestern College does not feel comfortable moving forward with this. Mr. McCall volunteered to help explain the procurement policy if requested by the college controller. Terry Jensen made a motion to recommend Chairman Alex Galicia to speak during public comments at Southwestern College to support the procurement policy on behalf of the Veterans Advisory Commission. • Strategic Plan of the City of Chula Vista -Captain Gary Ficacci gave an overview of the citywide strategic plan initiative. Captain Ficacci stated one of the goals is to ensure the citywide priorities are clear to all employees and holds all employees on all levels accountable. All departments will be responsible for monitoring their work and feedback. The main goal of the strategic plan is Quality of life. Five citywide goals are Operational Excellence, Economic Vitality, r Healthy Community, Strong & Secure Neighborhoods and Connected Community. Captain Ficacci encouraged commissioners to review the handout and contact him with any feedback or questions. The feedback will be presented to Council in February. In February/March all departments will be responsible to align their goals and objectives with the citywide goals. Final strategic plan presented in April, which will help devise the budget process. THE COMMITTEE IS SEEKING STRATEGIES TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF VET HOMES SUPPORTED BY THE PROGRAM. THE COMMITTEE IS SEEKING GRANTS AND PARTNERSHIP WITH BUSINESS'S TO SUPPORT THE PROGRAM.
