4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Virgil Whitehead made a motion to approve May minutes as written and was seconded by Terry Jensen. The
minutes were approved unanimously.
ACTION ITEMS
Veterans Activities: Virgil Whitehead presented the Veterans Activities Report (see attached)
1. 4th Of July Parade: Virgil Whitehead, John Acosta and Keith' Blum represented the VAC at the 4th of July
Parade in Coronado.
2. Memorial Park & Third Avenue Renovation Project: Veteran's monument to be discussed at next month's
meeting.
5. Library Honor & Remembrance Art Project: Possible Grand Opening date is November 11, 2013, when
the project is estimated to be completed.
12. VAC Cap: Virgil Whitehead will bring in a sample, as well as the cost at next month's meeting.
13. Veteran Walk Kick off event: Team Rally Event is set for October 12, 2013. So far $3,000 have been
raised.
DVBE Policy Update: No update.
• Veterans "Walk of Honor" Brick program: City of Chula Vista's Recreation Department is still running the
brick program. Tony Stewart will contact Assistant Director of Recreation, Kristi McClure to get an updated
flyer/application, get point of contact information, discuss how to go about fixing discrepancies on existing bricks
as well as discuss VAC's expectations in regards to the program. Walk of honor applications to be handed out at
Veterans Walk in November.
Veteran of they Year: VAC discussed two nominees, Mr. Robert L. Bailey and Mr. Macario Dimayuga. Majority
vote was for Mr. Bailey. Tony Stewart will get in contact with Mr. Bailey to assist in working on the packet for San
Diego County Veteran of the Year. Virgil Whitehead will also assist with putting the packet together.
OPEN DISCUSSION
Tony Stewart discussed the following:
Raffle benefiting breast cancer awareness and female veterans breast detection. Fundraiser will be held on July
20, 2013 at 2:OOpm at American Legion.
Padres baseball have reserved an entire section (72 seats) for Legion Members at Petco Park on August 18,
2013. The discounted price is $80 per person. Tickets are regularly $120 each.
Cigar Social at Post 434 will be held on September 14, 2013 benefitting Operation Comfort Warrior.
The office of the Chaplain at Camp Pendleton will hold a POW/MIA recognition day on September 20, 2013 at
11:30am.
A list of Congressionally -Chartered Veterans Service Organizations (by date of Charter) was distributed to
commissioners.
There is a new medical clinic in Chula Vista/Eastlake area, the Naval Branch Health Clinic. It is not a VA clinic.
Tony Stewart attended the 80th District Assembly Veteran of the Year event in Sacramento where he made a lot
of contacts, as well as got on email trackers for bills and veteran related information. Will provide more at next
month's meeting.
Virgil Whitehead discussed VAC's participation in this year's Starlight Parade on 3rd Avenue. Gary Ficacci stated
there is a possibility the parade will not be held this year.-
VAC Vacancy: Chair Keith Blum will approach the two VAC veteran of the year candidates to see if they're
interested in joining the VAC.
