4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Tony Stewart made a motion to approve July minutes as written and was seconded by Stephen Sprenkle. The
minutes were approved unanimously.
ACTION ITEMS
• Library Honor & Remembrance Art Project: Keith Blum submitted $1,500 grant application to Mayor's Office. Virgil
Whitehead will have a report at next month's meeting with possible changes to the project.
• DVBE Policy Update: No update. Keith Blum will contact Glen Googins regarding status.
• Veterans Activities: Virgil Whitehead presented the Veterans Activities Report (see attached).
Item 2 discussion: Tony Stewart suggested establishing a committee out of the 5 local veteran's service
organizations to discuss the renovation of the existing monument at Memorial Park. Tony Stewart and Virgil
Whitehead will take this on and approach the local VSO's and will have an update by next VAC meeting.
Item 6 discussion: Virgil Whitehead made a motion to have Chair Keith Blum send a letter to the City of Chula
Vista asking for $500 to sponsor a tent for Standown 2014. The motion was seconded by John Acosta and
approved by all members present.
• Veteran of the Year: Packet for Veteran of the Year, Mr. Robert L. Bailey will be submitted to Mayor's office. Tony
Stewart requesting proclamation to be presented on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 if possible. Virgil Whitehead to
hand carry packet for County of San Diego Veteran of the Year.
Veterans Walk Kick-off Fundraiser: Next event is the Team Rally and Cool down social event, which will be held
on October 12th, 2013. The Team Rally Event will no longer be held at the Elks Club. Tony Stewart will work on
possibly having the event at Memorial Park. t
• Veterans "Walk of Honor' Brick Program: Tony Stewart and Mariluz Zepeda to contact recreation department to
have brick application to be placed back online.
OPEN DISCUSSION
Virgil Whitehead reminded everyone there are Tricare medical outlets on 3rd Avenue, Eastlake parkway, and an
Urgent Care facility on Otay Lakes Rd and H Street, in the strip -mall across from Bonita Vista High school.
Keith Blum discussed a possibility that Tricare will be removed for Vets who are not of retirement eligible age.
Tony Stewart stated Wounded Warriors from Camp Pendleton`, active duty personnel, and approximately 80
legionnaires and veterans attended the Padres Game on August 18th and was a success.
The event benefitting Operation Comfort Warrior on September 14, 2013 will not be a Cigar Social. The post now
has the only Sanction Legion car club and will be holding a small scale car and bike show on September 14tH
Flyers for the car/bike show will be out soon.
A Cigar social will be held on October 26, 2013 for the "Veteran of the Year' end of year for Tony Stewart.
