4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Virgil Whitehead moved to approve minutes of March 16, 2014 as written. Commissioner Tony Stewart seconded
the motion, and it carried by the following vote:
Yes: 6 —Blum, Sprenkle, Whitehead, Jensen, Stewart and Bailey
ACTION ITEMS
• DVBE Update / evaluation and discussion of final documentation to be prepared by legal for City Council
Action: No update.
• CAL VET Under Secretary meeting with Veteran Home administrators (Neal Asper) and the Veteran's Home
Foundation. The Under Secretary requested that everyone write to their state representatives to recuperate
the volunteer program for the Veteran's Home.
• Recognition of businesses who hire/support veterans in Chula Vista. Virgil Whitehead submitted letters to
Home Depot, waiting on response.
• Neal Asper is no longer Administrator of Veteran's Home of Chula Vista: The VAC expressed general
displeasure of Neal Asper's removal.
• Veteran Village Standown, July 18-20, 2014. Volunteers and sponsors needed. Denny's is accepting donated
• clothing. Commissioner Tony Stewart made a motion to put in a recommendation to the City of Chula Vista to
sponsor a tent at Standown for $500. Commissioner Bob Bailey seconded the motion and it carried by the
following vote:
Yes: 6 —Blum, Sprenkle, Whitehead, Jensen, Stewart and Bailey
• Veteran Home Foundation Golf Tournament, May 08, 2014. Two cars were donated for hole -in -one.
Volunteers, golfers and sponsors needed. Point of contact is Jackie Bond 619-482-6033.
• Veterans Home Founders Day, May 17, 2014.Canopy and Veterans Advisory Commission banner will be set
up at the event.
• Major Cities are making serious attempts to resolve homeless problem. There at 8,900 homeless in San
Diego County, 2400 are veterans. VA is giving 65 million dollars in grants to participating cities.
• VAC Veteran of the Year selection process. Commissioner Tony Stewart made a motion to have the deadline
for Veteran of the Year at the end of July, selection and voting on August 20th and request to City Council on
September 9th, 2014. Commissioner Bob Bailey seconded the motion, and it carried by the following vote:
Yes: 6 —Blum, Sprenkle, Whitehead, Jensen, Stewart and Bailey
• Replacement for commissioners Sprenkle and Acosta who are due to term out this year. Commissioners are
encouraged to recruit new members.
OPEN DISCUSSION
Commissioner Whitehead shared the Veteran's Activities Report for April 2014.
