HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-09-11 CAC MinutesCHOMIST, Cultural Arts Commission MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA September 11, 2017 Civic Center Building A Conference Room C101 276 Fourth Avenue, Chula Vista 91910 CALL TO ORDER — 6:09pm ROLL CALL: Present: Vice Chair Rodriguez; Commissioners; Daniels, Delgado, Gray, Gore, Maynard, and Absent: Chair Cazares and Commissioner Sywyj. CONSENT CALENDAR 1. Declaration of excused/unexcused absenteeism August 14, 2017 Commissioner Daniels Motion made by Commissioner Gore, seconded by Delgado, and passed by a unanimous vote. 2. Approval of minutes August 14, 2017 Motion made by Commissioner Delgado, seconded by Commissioner Maynard, and passed by a unanimous vote. PUBLIC COMMENTS NONE INFORMATIONAL ITEMS 3. Ted Talk Chula Vista - Lormen Lincoln; Chula Vista Elementary School District Instructional Media Technology & Media Coordinator Antwon (Lormen) Lincoln from CVESD gave a short presentation on TEDx Chula Vista. The event is scheduled to be held May 19th, 2018 at Southwestern College Mayan Hall. The talk theme is ShiftEDx- Shifting into Awareness. It is focused on ideas worth spreading. The cost is $35 per ticket. Antwon asked for the Commission to let Ms. Tessitore know if they know of anyone that should be considered to be a speaker. Ms Tessitore will also assist with coordination of speakers and artists for the event. 4. Introduction of the Aging Creatively Dance Program- Sara Blodgett; San Diego Dance Theater Executive Director Sara Blodgett of San Diego Dance Theater presented the upcoming Aging Creatively Dance Program. The Aging Creatively Program is a modern dance and improvisation dance program scheduled to be taught by professional dance artists. It will culminate in one or two public performances in May 2018. The program is a partnership with Cultural Arts, Recreation, and San Diego Dance Theater and is fudned through a grant from the California Arts Council. This is the first program to receive funding in Chula Vista and the South Bay so if successful it will help lay the foundation for more state funding to be directed to Chula Vista in the future. The program is available for a cohort of 50 or older but no one will be denied participation. The Commission was asked to help spread the word. OTHER BUSINESS 5. STAFF COMMENTS Staff shared with the Commission that this year's Harborfest was a great success and thanked the Commission for volunteering. Next meeting the Commission will discuss subcommittees. Ms. Tessitore will send out the list of subcommittees. There are two new Commissioners so there may be some movement, if the Commission so chooses. Ms. Tessitore also shared info on the upcoming lit crawl ... LITerature on Third. The date is October 211t from 4-9pm. 6. CHAIR'S COMMENTS Vice Chair Rodriguez asked about potential for Starlight Caroling program again this year. Ms. Tessitore will look into that and whether the Commission will have a seat on the judging panel this year. 7. COMMISSIONERS' COMMENTS Commissioner Daniels shared with the Commsion that the La Jolla Playhouse would be holding their WOW Festival downtown October 19-22"a.
