MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION

1. Declaration of excused/unexcused absenteeism

2. Approval of minutes
July 10, 2017
Motion Chair Cazares made a motion to approve the minutes. The motion was
seconded by Commissioner Gray and passed unanimously.

INFORMATIONAL ITEMS
3. Recognition of the Richard Levin Orchestra Educator Award Winner, Danielle Bruce,
Hilltop Middle School - Lynnette Tessitore; Cultural Arts Manager
Ms. Bruce was recognized for her dedication and hard work in developing the Orchestra
at both Hilltop Middle and Hilltop High School. She will be presented the Richard Levin
Orchestra Educator award at an event in October.
4. Presentation of Creative Magazine; Jay Billups, Editor -in -Chief
Jay Billups presented his new local publication, Creative Magazine, a platform for artists,
educators, and creative entrepreneurs. It was discussed how staff and the Cultural Arts
Commission can assist with content and connecting the magazine to local artists,
educators, and creative entrepreneurs. It was further discussed that the magazine will
showcase the Cultural Arts Chula Vista artist spotlights (i.e. McCandliss Arts Awardees,
PVAG recipients, etc..)
5. Introduction and Overview of the South Bay Creative Union; Yumi Richards and Mark
Jamatillo
Yumi Richards and Mark Jamatillo introduced themselves and the South Bay Creative
Union or SBCU. SBCU is a new collaborative of artists with the mission of collaboration
between creative professionals, building connections with the community, and crating
experiences where art and passion come together. SBCU provided the Commission with
their business plan and is a 2017 PVAG award recipient, to host three events throughout
the upcoming year. SBCU meets on the first Friday of every months and can be reached
at sbcreativeunion.com.
6. Harborfest 2017 Update; Lynnette Tessitore; Cultural Arts Manager
Staff presented the Commission with this year's stage line up, information on the Art in
the Park Maker Faire area, and logistics for the day. Commissioners volunteered for set
time slots. All day volunteers will be Chair Cazares and Commissioner Gray, Ms.
Tessitore, and Karla Mendez. Commissioner Rodriguez will assist with stage tasks and
her daughter has volunteered to manage the stage. Commissioner Gray has
approximately 10 volunteers for the day and will assist in coordinating the National
Anthem singers for the Main Stage.

7. STAFF COMMENTS
Staff stated that in the fall, the subcommittees will reconvene. The big projects on staff
task list will be: Public Art Policy and Cultural Arts Assets Mapping. Next event is Lit
on Third, on October 21 S', time TBD.
