HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-08-14 SSC MinutesMINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE SUSTAINABILITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA August 14, 2017 5:00 PM A Regular Meeting of the Sustainability Commission of the City of Chula Vista was called to order at 5:01 pm in the Executive Conference Room 103, Building A, located at 276 Fourth Avenue, Chula Vista, California.. ROLL CALL PRESENT: Commissioners Kappes, Mora (arrived at 5:03 pm), Rahimzadeh, Romo and Chair Valen ABSENT: Commissioner Coleman MOTION TO EXCUSE: Commissioner Rahimzadeh moved to excuse Commissioner Romo from the meeting held on July 10, 2017. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Kappes and carried with the following vote: Yes — 4 Kappes, Rahimzadeh, Romo and Valen No -0 Abstain — 0 STAFF PRESENT: Chief Sustainability Officer Gakunga, Environmental Services Manager France, Senior Conservation Specialist Wisniewski, Conservation Specialist 11 Downs, Conservation Specialist I Corrales and Administrative Secretary Lindsey Commissioner Mora arrived APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Commissioner Kappes moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting on July 10, 2017. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Rahimzadeh and carried with the following vote: Yes — 5 Kappes, Mora, Rahimzadeh, Romo and Valen No -0 Abstain — 0 PUBLIC COMMENTS: none INFORMATION ITEMS none ACTION ITEMS 1. Climate Action Plan review and action. Conservation Specialist II Downs gave a presentation about the background for the creation of the Climate Action Plan. He explained the city's objectives, strategies and implementation actions for the Climate Action Plan. Sophie Wolfram, representing the Climate Action Campaign, spoke in opposition of the Climate Action Plan, Page I of 2 Sustainability Commission Minutes August 14, 2017 Each commissioner made comments and asked questions. After further discussion, Commissioner Rahimzadeh moved to recommend to the City Council to approve the Climate Action Plan, with the edits that were discussed tonight. Commissioner Romo seconded the motion and carried with the following vote: Yes — 5 Kappes, Mora, Rahimzadeh, Romo and Valen No -0 Abstain - 0 ACTIVITY REPORT Add to the Activity Report the recommendation for city council to approve the Climate Action Plan. STAFF COMMENTS Environmental Services Manager France reported that the Fixit Clinic on July 22 had twenty participants and a variety of items were fixed. She also asked if one of the commissioners would like to speak on September 12 when the Climate Action Plan will be presented to city council. Commissioner Kappes volunteered. She shared the good news that she will be receiving the Recycler of the Year Award from the California Resource Recycling Association on August 22 at their annual conference in San Diego at the Paradise Point Resort. The City of Chula Vista will be receiving the Zero Waste Innovation Award at the 1 Love A Clean San Diego's annual event on October 12. Being there are no agenda items at this time for the Sustainability Commission meeting in September, it will probably be cancelled. Senior Conservation Specialist Wisniewski reported that on August 16 there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony with the Mayor for the new mural installation and curriculum at the Civic Center Library Innovation Center. It showcases energy, innovation and education. She shared a board game that will be part of the curriculum. She also reported about the Harborfest event will be held on Saturday, August 19, at Bayside Park. Conservation Specialist I1 Downs reported that at the Harborfest event there will be energy savings products on sale from Techniart. COMMISSIONERS' COMMENTS Commissioner Romo reported that Environmental Services Manager France had visited the class he teaches at UCSD. CHAIR'S COMMENTS Chair Valen reported that he attended the Wildlife Advisory Group (WAG) meeting in July. ADJOURNMENT Chair Valen adjourned the meeting at 6:49 pm.
