E-51 was dispatched to a CFS of Multi -Family residential structure fire. E-51 arrived
at scene of a medium sized 2 story multi -family residential structure with light smoke and
some flame involvement from a second story unit on the alpha side. E-51 gave direction to
FFPM Davenport and FF/Captain EMT Elwart to pull an attack line to the second story and
attack the fire. E-51 provided an initial radio report and established Oaklawn IC. B-51
arrived at scene and took IC; E-51 was reassigned attack. Attack had pulled a 200 foot
ttr-an-sv-&r-s.e-pre=canned--up--..the-stai-r-we.l•l-for--.fi-re-attack-.•and--ha-d--kncck-da:-n-on-the--t-i-re - -
quickly. E-51 completed a primary search with nothing found. Both of these tactical
benchmarks were relayed to IC. Attack began to work on overhaul and pulled ceilings to
look for hidden fire. Attack also used a TIC to look along with pulling ceilings to verify
no hidden fire. NC T-34 performed horizontal ventilation and conducted a secondary search
with nothing found. E-51/attack stayed at scene to conduct an initial investigation and
ensure that the property was turned over to the proper personnel.
During the investigation, E-51 interviewed the family. The family consisted of 3
adults and 2 juveniles. E-51 interviewed _who was the resident. She
stated that her cousin was cooking on the stove, using cooking oil and that the oil caught
fire. The cousin then tried to use water to extinguish the fire and only spread the fire.
At this point, the fire was growing and the family exited the apartment and initiated 911.
The investigation showed corroborating evidence to back up the account of what happened.
The origin of the fire was at the back left of the stove top, with a defined V pattern that
went up the wall and to the cabinets. The point of the V pattern lined up with the rear
left burner on the stove top. There were two pots on the stovetop to the right of the
burner, 1 had what appeared to be a frying basket in it and another pot on top of it. The
fire was contained to the room of origin with heat and smoke damage to the kitchen. There
was smoke damage to:the rest of the apartment. The fire appeared to be unintentional in
nature.
The scene was turned over to the Regional Maintenance Supervisor for the
property. E-51 was released by B-51/IC and E-51 conducted the Fire Log and went available
via MDC.
