HomeMy WebLinkAboutcc min 1968/05/28 MINUTES OF AN ADJOURNED REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA, CALIFORNIA Held Tuesday May 28, 1968 An adjourned regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Chula Vista was held at 2:10 P.M., on the above date with the following Councilmen present: Councilmen Sylvester~ Hamilton, McCorquodale, McAllister, Scott Absent: None Also present: Administrative Officer Ross, Assistant Administrative Officer Stenberg, Administrative Assistant Sullins, Finance Officer Grant BUDGET SESSION The Council continued their review of the proposed recommendations for the 1968-69 budget and minute action was taken in the following sequence: (1) After a presentation by Charles S. Shippey, President of the Chula Vista Chamber of Commerce, it was moved by Mayor McCorquodale~ seconded by Councilman Sylvester that the Council approve the sum of $6,200.00 for items designated as No. 25 No. 7~ No, l0s an~ No. 11 of Attachment "C" of the Chamber's budget request. These items are as follows: No. 2 - San Diego County Fair Booth $ 1,000.00 No. 7 - Special Industrial Development Activitims 2,000.00 No. 10- Printing of "Know Your Town" Survey~ League of Women Voters 1,000.00 No. 11- Chula Vi~ta's Participation in 200th Anniversary 2~000.00 Total $ 6,200.00 Thereafter, Councilman Sylvester proposed an amendment to Mayor Mc- Corquodale's motion which would add $7,000.00 for services performed by the Chula Vista Chamber of Commerce under Attachment "B" and funds amounting to $2,325.00 for two billboards on Interstate 5~ north and south lanes. Subsequently, Councilman Scott moved to table the original motion. This motion died for lack of a second. Councilman Sylvester proposed a second amendment which would include $1,800.00 for parade activities and $250.00 for the annual Miss Chula Vista contest, both sums of which would be assigned to the Junior Chamber of Com- merce. Thereafter, Mayor McCorquodale~$ original motion and the two amend- ments proposed by Councilman Sylvester failed to carry by a vote of 2 to 3. Councilmen McAllister~ Scott and Sylvester voted no. (2) It was moved by Councilman Hamilton, seconded by Councilman Syl- rester, and carried by a vote of 3 to 2 that the sum of $10,000.00 be provided for the operational activities of the Chamber of Commerce and, furthermore, that the additional sum of $22,500.00 be provided for promotional activities which would include $2,000.00 for parade activities and $500.00 for the annual Miss Chula Vista contest. Mayor McCorquodale and Councilman Scott voted no. (3) It was moved by Councilman McAllister, seconded by Councilman Sylvester~ and unanimously carried that the sum of $15,000.00 be added to the Book account in the Public Library budget for the purchase of additional library books. This amount would increase the recommendation of $45,000.00 to an approved book budget of $60,000.00 for the 1968-69 fiscal year. Speak- ing in support of increasing the Library's budget was Mrs. Carol Smith, Chair- man of the Board of Library Trustees.
