MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE
VETERANS ADVISORY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA
6:00 pm
A regular meeting of the Veteran Advisory Commission of the City of Chula Vista was called to
order at 6:03 pm in the Chula Vista Police Department, 315 Fourth Avenue, Chula Vista,
California.
ROLL CALL
PRESENT: Commissioners Bailey, Mueller, Perez, Sears, Stewart, and Torres
ABSENT: Chair Wunder
ALSO PRESENT: Vern Sallee, Staff Liaison
Mariluz Zepeda, Secretary
1. Approval of Minutes
ACTION: Commissioner Bailey moved to approve the March 15, 2017 minutes as
written. Commissioner Sears seconded the motion, and it carried by the following vote:
Yes: 6- Bailey, Mueller, Perez, Sears, Stewart and Torres
Public Comments: None.
Guest: None.
ACTION ITEMS:
a) Chula Vista Veterans Park Brick Program: Chula Vista Veterans Park Brick
Program update. Update on Recreation Director, Kristi McClure Huckaby’s
discussion with Friends of the Park regarding sharing of the proceeds from the
Veterans Brick program with the Veterans Home Foundation. Kristi McClure
Huckaby was not able to attend this month’s meeting but will attend next month to give
an update. Commissioner Mueller volunteered to take over as the lead once
Commissioner Bailey terms out.
b) Fallen Veteran Memorial at Memorial Park: Update on New School of Architecture
and Design Urban studies class’ VAC proposal for Fallen Veteran Memorial at
Memorial Park. Commissioner Torres will review the proposals and return them at next
month’s VAC meeting. Commissioner Stewart will contact Chair Wunder to see if the
proposals are available electronically.
c) Veteran Memorial at Bay Front Park. Discussion of looking into having a section of
the Bay Front Park dedicated to a Veteran Memorial. Vern Sallee will contact
Community Development and the Port of San Diego to get a sense of what the park plans
are. Commissioner Mueller will contact Councilmembers John McCann and Michael
Diaz to set up a meeting to discuss the concept.

d) Fallen Heroes Banners at Chula Vista Mall. Discussion on commissioners making
contact with management to discuss possible displaying of Fallen Hero banners at
Chula Vista Mall. Commissioner Torres met with Kyle Godad, manager at Chula Vista
Mall. Mr. Godad seemed interested in displaying the banners but will need to run it by
their marketing department. The goal is to display the banners by November, Veterans
Day 2017.
e) Chair Wunder’s absence from April and June meetings. Commissioner Perez moved
to approve Chair Wunder’s absence from April and June 2017 meetings. Commissioner
Bailey seconded the motion, and it carried by the following vote:
Yes: 6- Bailey, Mueller, Perez, Sears, Stewart and Torres
f) Selection of Vice Chair. Selection of Vice Chair to replace Commissioner Ramirez.
Commissioner Perez nominated Commissioner Mueller for Vice Chair. Commissioner
Sears moved to approve Commissioner Mueller’s nomination for Vice Chair.
Commissioner Bailey seconded the motion, and it carried by the following vote:
Yes: 6- Bailey, Mueller, Perez, Sears, Stewart and Torres
g) Veteran of the Year Update: Discussion of 2017 application deadline, advertisement
and getting the word out on getting nominations. Advertisement for VOY
nominations will be advertised in the May issue of Our Hometown Magazine. Press
release will also be forwarded to Diane Howell, Public Information Specialist to have it
posted on City’s social media and the City’s Community Connection.
h) Veterans Stand Down Funds Request: Discussion of submittal of funds request to
the City to go towards the Stand Down. Funds request for $500 was approved. VVSD
will provide an invoice for the $500 to the City as requested. Contact Commissioner
Stewart if interested in volunteering for the Stand Down event in July.
i) Chula Vista Veterans Walk update: No update, table for May meeting.
j) Veterans Activities Report: There is no Veterans Activities report for the month of
April 2017.
2. OTHER BUSINESS:
Staff Comments:
The annual VAC activities report is due June 28th, 2017.

Commissioner’s Comments:
Commissioner Mueller: USC is hosting a Veterans event “A night to shine, a mission to support
Veterans” May 9th 6:30-9:00pm. All proceeds going to Veteran scholarship programs and transition
support for veterans.
State of the American Veteran Conference in Los Angeles area. Regarding various studies throughout the
country regarding the needs of veterans and how they have been addressed. September 28th & 29th 2017.
Commissioner Sears: The Saturday of Memorial Day weekend in Rosecrans, Miramar and Glenn Abbey
the Boy Scouts will be marking graves of veterans with flags.
Commissioner Bailey: Announce that he will not be doing a second term as commissioner for the VAC.
ADJOURNMENT
At 6:53 pm, Commissioner Stewart adjourned the meeting to the next on May 17, 2017 in the
Chula Vista Police Department, Community Conference Room, Chula Vista, California.
