HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-03-15 VAC MinutesMINUIES OF A SPECIAL MEEIING Ol: THE VETERANS ADVISORY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISIA 6:00 pm A Special Meeting of the Veteran Advisory Commission of the City of Chula Vista was called to ordei at 5:37 pm in the Chula Vista Police Department, 315 Foulth Avenue, Chula Vista, California ROLL CALL PRESENT:Chali Wunder, Commissioners, Stewar't, Bailey, Perez I9ires, Seals and MuelleI ABSENT: ALSO PRESENT:Vein Sallee, Start Liaison Maliluz Zepeda, Secretary 1 Approval of Minutes ACTION: Commissioner Stewart moved to approve the February 15, 2017 minutes as wlitten Commissioner Bailey seconded the motion, and it Carlied by the following vote: Yes: 7- Stewalt, Bailey, Perez, Torles, MuelleI, Seals and Wunder Public Comments: None Guest: Recreation Director Kfisti McClule Huckaby ACTION IIEMS: a) Chula Vista Veterans Park Brick Program: Chula Vista Veterans Park Brick Program update. Update on Recreation Director, Ktisti McClure Huckaby's discussion with Friends of the Park regarding sharing of the proceeds from the Veterans Brick program with the Veterans Home Foundation. Recreation Dilector Klisti McClule Huckaby gave an update on the discussion of the blick proglam at the last Fliends of the Park board meeting Ihe tleasulei is to ieview all expenditures and ievenues foI the blick proglam to date then present the board an overview of what the proceeds have been Ihe friends of the park board supports the idea of having some of the proceeds go to the Vetelans Home Foundation They would like to review the available proceeds befbre moving forward b)Fallen Veteran Memorial at Memorial Park: Update on New School of Architecture and Design Urban studies class' VAC proposal for' Fallen Veteran Memorial at Memorial Park Commissionei Bailey will ieview the proposals and return them at next month's VAC meeting Commissioners Stewart moved to target June 201'7 as the target date for the commission to have a conclete plan/idea foI MemolJal Palk Commissioner Sears seconded motion, and it carried by the following vote: Yes: 7- Stewart, Bailey, Perez, tortes, Mueller, Sears and Wundei Page 1 [ Veterans Advisory Commission Minutes March 15, 2017 Vern Sallee suggested looking into the Bay Front Park to dedicate a section o5 the park foI a Veterans Memoliai Commissioner Stewart moved to identity a commissioner as the point of contact to look into having a section ot the Bay t Iont Park for Veteran Memorial Commissioner Sears seconded motion, and it carlied by the following vote: Yes: 7- Stewart, Bailey, Perez, lotles, MuelleL Sears and Wunder Commissioner IvIueller volunteered to be the point of contact for the Signature Park at Bay Fiont Palk e)Fallen Heroes Banners at Chula Vista Mall. Discussion on commissioner's making contact with management to discuss possible displaying of Fallen Hero banner's at Chula Vista Mall. Commissioner Fortes has had difficulty contacting management for the Chula Vista Mali Commissione Tories has left messages, cmails and has gone in person with no success Chair Wunder will attempt to make contact with management as well d) t) h) g) e) Veteran of the Year Update: Discussion of 2017 application deadline, advertisement and getting the word out on getting nominations. Chair WundeI asked commissioners to spread the wold on soliciting lot nominations Vein Sallee will discuss with command staff to look into nominating a police officer at CVPD Commissioner Pelez will solicit at the local schools Veterans Stand Down Funds Request: Discussion of submittal of funds /request to the City to go towards the Stand Down.. Chair Wunder sent a Iequest to the City Manager who will look into the request Veteran's Administrations "Million Veteran Program". The "Million Veteran Program" is half' way to their goal of enrolling 1 million veterans in the genomic research database to help improve health care t0r Veterans and Americans.
