HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-02-15 VAC MinutesPage 1 | Veterans Advisory Commission Minutes February 15, 2017 MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE VETERANS ADVISORY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA 6:00 pm A Regular Meeting of the Veteran Advisory Commission of the City of Chula Vista was called to order at 6:04pm in the Veterans Home conference room, located at 700 E. Naples Court, Chula Vista, California. ROLL CALL PRESENT: Chair Wunder, Commissioners, Stewart, Bailey, Perez Torres, Sears and Mueller ABSENT: ALSO PRESENT: Vern Sallee, Staff Liaison Mariluz Zepeda, Secretary 1. Approval of Minutes ACTION: Commissioner Stewart moved to approve the January 18, 2017 minutes as written. Commissioner Bailey seconded the motion, and it carried by the following vote: Yes: 7- Stewart, Bailey, Perez, Torres, Mueller, Sears and Wunder Public Comments: None. ACTION ITEMS: a) Chula Vista Veterans Park Brick Program: Chula Vista Veterans Park Brick Program update. Update on Recreation Director, Kristi McClure Huckaby’s discussion with Friends of the Park regarding sharing of the proceeds from the Veterans Brick program with the Veterans Home Foundation. Recreation Director Kristi McClure Huckaby will attend March meeting to give an update. b) Age Friendly Communities: (Item discussed before item a.) Mario Sanguinet with Healthy Chula Vista gave an introduction of City of Chula Vista’s membership to the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities. This network aims to make communities more accessible for people of all ages and abilities. Efforts include community outreach, to engage citizens and hear their thoughts; and data collection, to establish baseline metrics and track improvement. All of which will contribute to an implementation plan that will help residents age in place. This program is in the data-gathering phase and will be planning a “Community Café” event at the Veterans home to gather information from the residents. Mr. Sanguinet will email more information on the Age Friendly Community program to commissioners. Chair Wunder distributed three proposals for the Veteran Memorial created by the students of New School of Architecture. Commissioner Stewart will review the proposals and return them at next month’s VAC meeting. d) Fallen Heroes Banners at Chula Vista Mall. Discussion on commissioners making contact with management to discuss possible displaying of Fallen Hero banners at Chula Vista Mall. Commissioner Torres is in the process of communicating with Chula Vista Mall to discuss displaying the Fallen Hero banners at the mall. The City of Chula Vista is currently working on a policy on displaying banners throughout the city. e) Commissioner Business Cards request: Commissioner Stewart moved to request the Chula Vista Police Foundation donate up to $500 for business related expenses for purposes of the VAC to purchase nametags. Commissioner Sears seconded the motion and it carried by the following vote: Yes: 7- Stewart, Bailey, Perez, Torres, Mueller, Sears and Wunder Staff Liaison Vern Sallee will also look into using the Police Department’s photo ID printing system to print ID cards for commissioners. f) Chula Vista Veterans Home Annual Golf Classic tournament: Commissioner Stewart will get information on what is needed for the event. g) Commissioner Perez’s absence from January meeting. Commissioner Stewart moved to approve Commissioner Perez’s absence from January meeting. Commissioner Bailey seconded the motion, and it carried by the following vote: Yes: 7- Stewart, Bailey, Perez, Torres, Mueller, Sears and Wunder h) Commissioner Bailey’s absence from January meeting. Commissioner Sears seconded the motion, and it carried by the following vote: Yes: 7- Stewart, Bailey, Perez, Torres, Mueller, Sears and Wunder i) Veteran of the Year Update: Receive and update on the packet submittal for the County Veteran of the Year Award. Discuss VOY’s City Council meeting attendance to be presented with the proclamation. Chair Wunder asked commissioners to spread the word on soliciting for nominations. j) Veterans Stand Down Funds Request: Discussion of submittal of funds request to the City to go towards the Stand Down. Tabled for March meeting. k) Veterans Activities Report: There is no Veterans Activities report for the month of February. Commissioner Torres to meet with Commissioner Stewart to go over the format and content of the Veterans Activities Report. Page 3 | Veterans Advisory Commission Minutes February 15, 2017 2. OTHER BUSINESS: Staff Comments: Vern Sallee: Discussed Chula Vista Police Foundation non-profit organization provides support for efforts that enhance police/community relations, crime prevention and public safety. Contributions go to programs such as the Shoe and Sock drive, K-9 program, and the Explorer program. More information is available at www.chulavistapolicefoundation.org. Chair’s Comments: No additional comments. Commissioner’s Comments: Commissioner Perez: Attended the Toys for Tots appreciation luncheon. Camp Pendleton to dedicate a Purple Heart monument on February 22, 2017. Discussed the Purple Heart preservation act. If the bill is to become law, it would be illegal to buy and sell military issued Purple Hearts as collector item. Commissioner Bailey: Pre-registration is available for spaces at the National Cemetery. Approximately 18 Iwo Jima Veterans will be at the Marine Corp museum on February 17, 2017. Commissioner Stewart: Us 4 Warriors fed about 60 families of five or more in household and received Christmas gifts. Group of 20 volunteers at Veterans home handling projects around the building and landscaping. Volunteers will be at the home every 2 months. Food4Warriors 20 volunteers fed 175 people on January 27, 2017 at American Legion Post 434. Food4Warriors will be in Central San Diego in February, El Cajon in March, Oceanside in April and back in Chula Vista in May 2017. Combat to Comedy will be performing for Marine Corp wounded Warrior trial in March at Camp Pendleton. The comedians will also be in Chula Vista March 15, 2017 at the American Legion Post 434 fundraiser to help support program. Vets Connect kiosks are at six of San Diego public libraries. Veterans Service Representatives from VA are there to assist with filling out VA forms needed for claims. Vietnam Veteran pins to recognize Vietnam veterans are available.
