HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-02-13 SSC MinutesMINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE SUSTAINABILITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA February 13, 2017 5:00 PM A Regular Meeting of the Sustainability Commission of the City of Chula Vista was called to order at 5:06 pm in the Executive Conference Room 103, Building A, located at 276 Fourth Avenue, Chula Vista, California.. ROLL CALL PRESENT: Commissioners Coleman, Kappes, Rahimzadeh (arrived at 5:11 pm), Romo and Chair Valen ABSENT: Commissioners Jaime and Mora MOTION TO EXCUSE: Commissioner Coleman moved to excuse Commissioners Jaime, Kappes and Valen from the meeting held on January 9, 2017. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Romo and carried with the following vote: Yes — 4 Coleman, Kappes, Romo and Valen No -0 Abstain — 0 STAFF PRESENT: Environmental Services Manager France, Senior Conservation Specialist Wisniewski, Senior Recycling Specialist Medrano, Conservation Specialist Downs and Senior Secretary Lindsey APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Commissioner Kappes moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting on January 9, 2017, with one correction. The correction being the misspelling of Council member McCann's name under the Activity Report. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Rama and carried with the following vote: Yes — 4 Coleman, Kappes, Romo and Valen No -0 Abstain — 0 PUBLIC COMMENTS: None INFORMATION ITEMS were heard after Action Items at the meeting Commissioner Rahimzadeh arrived ACTION ITEMS 1. Consideration of 2017 CLEAN Champion Awards framework and nomination form. After discussion, it was decided to move the Award Categories to the top of page 2 and the Nomination Questions to the bottom of page 2. Commissioner Roma moved to approve the framework and the form with the change on the form. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Rahimzadeh and carried with the following vote: Page I of 2 Sustainability Commission Alinates February 13, 2017 Yes — 5 Coleman, Kappes, Rahimzadeh, Romo and Valen No -0 Abstain — 0 Commissioner Roma left the meeting at 5:25 pm INFORMATION ITEMS 1. Lou EI-Khazen, Building Official/Code Enforcement Manager, informed the commission about the city's process for residents to obtain permits for solar installation on homes. ACTIVITY REPORT Include under activities that Lou El-Khazen explained about the permit process for solar installation. STAFF COMMENTS Environmental Services Manager France talked about the article that will be in the March issue of Our Hometown Magazine concerning the Sustainability Commission. Senior Conservation Specialist Wisniewski talked about the South Bay Earth Day event on April 8 and the CLEAN Business Awards event on March 9. Conservation Specialist Downs talked about the Climate Change Working Group meeting to be held on March 21 for review of the city's Climate Action Plan, Senior Conservation Specialist Medrano talked about the Free Compost Giveaway event to be held at the Otay Landfill on March 25. He also talked about the Fix It Clinic to be held on April 15 at the Civic Center Library which is being coordinated by Zero Waste San Diego. He explained about the mini -grant through CalRecycle to provide recycling containers, at no cost, to businesses and that the city's Zero Waste Policy continues to be worked on. COMMISSIONERS' COMMENTS Commissioner Coleman reported that the January 18 meeting of the Wildlife Advisory Group did not meet because they did not have a quorum. The next meeting is scheduled for April t9 at the Living Coast Discovery Center. CHAIR'S COMMENTS Chair Valen reminded the commission that at the May 8, 2017 meeting, members of the Tijuana Sustainability Commission will be visiting.
