MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA
November 14, 2016

Staff recommendation: Excuse the absence(s)
Motion made by Commissioner Gore, and seconded by Commissioner Rodriguez. The
motion passed unanimously.
2. Approval of minutes

3. Presentation On Age -Friendly Cornmunities; Stacey Kurz, Healthy Chula Vista
Coordinator
Staff Recommendation: Commission hear the presentation.
Healthy Chula Vista staff member Mario Sanguinet presented information on the City's
Age Friendly Living Community designation. Healthy Chula Vista in partnership with
AARP will be collecting data to understand how well and how better Chula Vista can
provide age friendly living opportunities to the senior community. Staff anticipates a
joint workshop with the CAC, the Healthy Chula Vista Commission, and the Conunission
on Aging to collaborate on ways to better engage with the senior community.

4. Presentation of the "We Are Chula Vista" Photography Contest; Stacey Kurz, Healthy
Chula Vista Coordinator
Staff Recommendation: That the Conunission appoint 2 members to assist in judging
the photography contest.
Nick Paul presented the We Are Chula Vista Photo campaign. The campaign is kicking
off with a photography contest. The contest deadline is December 1. The winners will
be displayed at City Hall in the new Cultural Arts space located in the City
Administration Building lobby. A memo was sent to the Colmnission on November 10°i,
advising that the judging will take place on December 1, at 6pm, at City Hall Bldg A. A
save the date for the ribbon cutting of the arts space was sent to the Commission, as well.
Motion made by Commissioner Rodriguez

5. Chula Vista Rotary Clubs Instrumentalist Sponsorship Competition; Lynnette Tessitore;
Cultural Arts Manager
Staff provided an overview of the Sponsorship Competition and provided a flyer with the
associated dates. The Rotary Clubs have invited two CAC Commissioners to sit on the
selection committee to judge. The selection committee will convene sometime in
December with the Rotary Club competition held in January.
Staff Recommendation: That the Commission appoint 2 members to sit on the selection
panel.
Motion made by Commissioner Gore to appoint Conunissioner Rodriguez and
Commissioner Prater to sit on the selection colmnittee with Delgado as an alternate. The
motion was seconded by Commissioner Zhivago. The motion passed unanimously.

OTHER BUSINESS
6. STAFF COMMENTS
Staff thanked Commissioners Zhivago and Rodriguez for sitting on the judging panel for
Eastlake High School's PTA's sponsored Reflections Showcase. Staff attended the event
and was pleased to see the level of talent and great artistic work of FHS students. Staff
provided information on McCandliss Arts Awards, the We Are Chula Vista competition
and the Rotary Club Competition.
Holiday in the Village needs the volunteers again this year. The event will be held 12pm-
4pm on December 3. Commissioner Rodriguez provided a status on the carolers and
staff confirmed that Cormnissioner Prater will be a judge at the Starlight Parade.
Commissioners Cazares and Delgado stated they would be able to work the event.
Staff handed out flyers for Commissioner's to use in their outreach for the McCandliss
Arts Awards.
Staff informed the Commission of a partnership between the City and South western
College. As a way to provide art out in the conummity, Staff collaborated with
Southwestern College (SWC) and Chula Vista Center for the SWC Fall Student Art
Show. An opening reception will be held tomorrow night, November 15, 2016 at 6pm.
7. CHAIR'S COMMENTS
Chair Cazares stated that she recognized that there was a lot of work being done, and
asked that the Commission be mindful of anything beyond the work plan and to be sure
to work through staff with additional ideas. Staff will be working with the Commission
and subcommittees on the first year work plan tasks beginning January. December will
be a planning meeting with January as a kickoff for the subcommittees.
S. COMMISSIONERS' COMMENTS
Commissioner Gore mentioned that a local artist passed away and that the estate was
interested in getting rid of two white marble statues that he had done. Staff
recommended that the Public Art subcommittee (Reinhart and Gore) take under
consideration and then bring a recommendation back to the larger Commission if they
find that they want to pursue acquiring the pieces.
Commissioner Delgado suggested that the Commission invite Bill Virchis to speak to the
Commission to provide historical perspective on Cultural Arts in Chula Vista. Chair
Cazares will work with Commissioner Delgado on topic/ideas for the focused
presentation. Staff also recommended that the Commission consider awarding him with
a McCandliss Arts Award and possibly other opportunities for recognition for all of his
contributions to cultural arts in Chula Vista.
