Notice is hereby given that the Healthy Chula Vista Advisory Commission of the City of
Chula Vista has called and will convene a Special Meeting on Thursday, September 8, 2016 at
Lauderbach Park, located at 345 Oxford Street, Chula Vista, California to consider the item(s)
on this agenda.

ROLL CALL: Commissioners Cruz, de Murguia, Martinez, Milburn, Partida-Lopez, Quiroz, Velo, Vice

CONSENT CALENDAR
The Board/Commission will enact the Consent Calendar staff recommendations by one motion, without
discussion, unless a Board/Commission Member, a member of the public, or staff requests that an item be
and submit it to the Secretary prior to the meeting. Items pulled from the Consent Calendar will be discussed
immediately following the Consent Calendar.
1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM August 11, 2016
Staff recommendation: Review Attachment 1 and approve minutes.

the Board/Commission from discussing or taking action on any issue not included on the agenda, but, if
appropriate, the Board/Commission may schedule the topic for future discussion or refer the matter to staff.

2. STATE GRANT APPLICATION FOR NEW ACTIVE RECREATION OPPORTUNITIES AT
LAUDERBACH PARK
Tim Farmer, Principal Recreation Manager will provide an overview of a state grant program and
possible projects at Lauderbach Park.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Commission hear the presentation.
3. HOSPITAL COMMUNITY HEALTH NEEDS ASSESSMENT & IMPLEMENTATION PLAN
FOR SHARP HEALTHCARE
Jillian Barber, Sharp HealthCare Community Benefits and Health Improvement Program
Manager will provide an overview of the recently completed Community Health Needs
Assessment (CHNA) for San Diego region hospitals and specifically Sharp Chula Vista Medical
Center (SCVMC), as well as SCVMC programs designed to address community health needs.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Commission hear the presentation.
4. HEALTHY CHULA VISTA ADVISORY COMMISSION ROLE AND GOAL SETTING FOR
FY17
Staff will provide an overview of the role of the Commission and discuss goal setting for this
fiscal year.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Commission discuss and provide direction to staff of Commission goals
for the year.

August 11, 2016 3:30 P.M.
A Special Meeting of the Healthy Chula Vista Advisory Commission of the City of Chula Vista
was called to order at 3:33 p.m. in Conference Room 6, located at Norman Park Senior Center,
270 F Street, Chula Vista, CA
ROLL CALL
PRESENT: Commissioners Martinez (arrived at 4:04), Jimenez, Milburn,
Partida-Lopez (arrived at 3:40), Quiroz, Velo and Chair Melgoza
ABSENT: Commissioners Cruz and de Murgia
ALSO PRESENT: Senior Project Coordinator Kurz

Motion by Commissioner Quiroz to approve the minutes

None.
ACTION ITEMS
2. NORMAN PARK SENIOR CENTER OVERVIEW
Sandy Chavez and Wendi Garrison from the City Recreation Department provided an
overview of programs and services provided to seniors at the Norman Park Senior Center
and throughout the city.
3. WALKING FOR FITNESS
Khalisa Bolling from UCSD provided an overview of the peer led research walking
program.
4. CHULA VISTA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT (CVESD) BODY MASS INDEX
Attachment 1
Heather Cruz from the Chula Vista Elementary School District provided an review of the
BMI study that is conducted throughout the district and resulting programs that have been
adopted to combat obesity in schools.
5. RESOLUTION ADJUSTING THE REGULAR MEETING START TIME & LOCATION
Motion by Commissioner Milburn to adopt the Resolution adjust the regular meeting to
the second Thursday of each month at 3:30pm in room B111 at 276 Fourth Avenue,
Building C.
Seconded by Commissioner Jimenez
Motion passed 7-0
OTHER BUSINESS
6. STAFF COMMENTS
Staff Kurz provided an update to the following projects:
Age-Friendly AARP will be conducting a phone survey of residents age 45+ and
staff is working on an outreach plan.
Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Staff has been directed to bring forward an incentive
based program for restaurants to make water and milk the default beverage options
South Bay Hunger Relief Forum 9/12/16 Mayor Casillas Salas and
Assemblymember Dr. Weber will be speaking at the food insecurity forum set from
10 am-12 pm at the Civic Center Library.
Staff indicated that the next meeting of the Commission would include presentations of
the recently completed Hospital Community Needs Health Assessment.

Chair Melgoza thanked the Commission for their input during the presentations.

Commission Quiroz indicated that she is looking for participants at the Castle Park 5210

health fair on September 8 from 1-3 pm.
Commissioners expressed interest in learning more about food nutrition services at Chula
Vista Elementary School District on a future agenda.
