Good Evening Mayor& City Council:
I'm here because I'm concemed about Norman Park Senior Center fee increases.
#1-Egercise Classes, The Zumba Ctass cost $1.00 to walk in, but now it's been replaced with a
Cardio Class which will cost $12 res-$15 non res per month in November.
The Line Dancing Class was offered for $3.00 to walk in and now the cost is $6.00 for walk in
the cost used to be $12 a month now it's increased to $20 res- $24 non res.
• The exercise classes are taught by volunteers at no cost to the city.
#2-The center previously offered several computer classes and now it has onlv 1 computer class
taught on a one to one basis for $20 an hour. The computer ciasses are now down to only one
teacher.
• It was the NP seniors & community of Chula Vista who raised & donated the money for
those computers.
#3-The clubs, The Korea Club, the Garden Club and Club Amistad:
The clubs have to pay set-up fees on average of$32 and were told they may go up in Dec.
• Some of these clubs help out the city by donating their time & volunteer to help beautify the
city parks, libraries, and even city hall.
#4- Social Activities:
The Costume Contest in Oct has a fee of$5 res/6 non res
The Pumpldn Pie social in Nov. has a fee of$2 for coffee & pie
The Hofiday Brunch has a fee of$5 res/6 non res
• Some of these social activities are sponsored by businesses in the community, they also
donate many of the gift cards for these events. So why is Norman Park charging seniors?
We need a Norman Park Senior Center in this community-- many of your citizens utilize and
participate in these activities. '
We want traasparency & accounta6ility for the money (Approximately, $30,000) that The
Norman Pazk Educational Foundation voted to be turned over to the City of Chula Vista. We
promised the donors that it would be used at Norman Park Senior Center not at a recreation center.
VJe want a Citizens Review Committee to oversee the transfer of those funds and to help the city
in resolving the financial problems at Norman Park
Thank you for your time,
Gloria Escalera
