Subject: Term Limitr
Dear Mayor and Councilmembers,
I see that you are going to discuss referring to the Charter Review Commission a request to review
potential term limit revisions. While for many years I was generaliy opposed to limits, not wanting to
give up my right to vote for an effective leader, iri more recent years, I've become a bit more open to
them, though I wish they were unnecessary. I've just seen too many politicians in office so long that
they often forget whaYs it's like to be a regular citizen and live under what they do or fail to do for us.
That said, I am neither advocating for or against having the Charter Review Commission look at this,
however, knowing that elections are expensive and also considering that we will have district
elections going forward, depending on the extent of term limit change you may want, it may be
unnecessary.
If the issue is that the current sitting out for one election is too shoR, basically making the siting out
period just shy of two years (from leaving office to winning another office), with district elections and
current term limits, unless a person moves from one district to another, there will now be a built in 4
year sitting out period. So if a longer sitting out period is the goal, we'll now have that, unless there is
concern that candidates will move between districts in order to try for re-election sooner. ThaYs a
logistical and an expensive proposition for most with selling and buying houses and moving
frequently. So I'm not sure how much of a risk there really is that candidates wili do this. Again, I'm
not advocating one way or the other at this point, just wanting to point out some factors to consider in
deciding the need to look at this or not.
Regards, •
