Dear Council Members:
Thank }ou for approine the historical desienation on our Rohr drop hammer. But I
ould like vou to kno somethins not senerall kno«m.
b'hen I eas do+n on the Rohr grounds one day, I noticed a drop hammer in the salvae
yard. It «as taken apart. but it vas eas to recoenize the pieces. [ asked the scrap eu if that
was, indeed, a Rohr drop hammer. Yes, it was.So that raised the question -- ho in the orld
could +-e Qet Goodrich to vive us that drop hammer??
Frank Roseman and myself realized that the would not pay much attention to us, and so
e ould hae to aet someone ith some stature to request it. The most "stamre° in this tonm
are ou people on the City CounciL Like most families in Chula Vista ho had relatives ho
orked at Rohr, John 7cCann as aha}s proud to point out that his mother had orked at
Rohr. It is sort of passin out of stle noti, but it has ahra-s been a "badge of honor' to sav
someone in vour familv had orked at Rohr.
So I approached Councilman John A4cCann and told him vhat ve ere tnine to do, and
would he Tite a letter to the President of Goodrich askine if our n4useum could hae that drop
hammer? He said `certainly;' and he did so, and thus we have a Rohr drop harnrner. Goodrich
spent a lot monev cleanine the drop hammer, then paintine it in iis original colors as «e
requested. then hauling it do+n Third Aenue at 3 in momine to install it on the foundation we
had built.
So 1 am as proud as [ can be about that Rohr drop hammer, but understand that it neer
vould hae happened had Councilman 4cCann not itten that letter. I ven much appreciate
that act!
