ITEM TITLE: Report - 1984 Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony
Resolution ///13/ Approving agreement with Union Ice Company
to provide snow and holding Union Ice Company harmless

The City will conduct its annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in Memorial
Bowl at 7:00 p.m. , Thursday, December 13, 1984.
RECOMMENDATION: That Council :
1 . Agree to participate in the festivities.
2. Adopt the resolution approving the attached agreement and authorizing the
Mayor to execute it on behalf of the City, and
BOARDS/COMMISSIONS RECOMMENDATION: Not applicable.
DISCUSSION:
Representatives of affected City departments and the Mayor have met to plan
and organize this year's Christmas tree lighting activities. The following
have been planned:
- Master of Ceremonies duties will be performed by television Channel 8
personality Clark Anthony.
- Two, as yet unnamed, Padre baseball players will be Guests of Honor.
- Musical entertainment will be provided by the Bonita Vista High School
"Music Machine."
Public Works will relocate the tree donated by the Bonita Optimist Club from
the Civic Center to Memorial Bowl , west of the amphitheater.
The tree will be lighted, but lights will not blink.
Two snow piles will be provided in the Bowl area; one for children eight years
of age and under and one for children nine and over.
Before Union Ice Company will deliver the snow, the City must execute an
agreement for the service. The agreement includes a clause holding the
company harmless for any damages to City property or individuals resulting
from the delivery of the snow. A certificate of insurance is being provided
to Union Ice, as required by the agreement, in the amount of $1 million,
showing them as an additional insured.

Police reserve officers will be assigned to ensure safe conduct in the
vicinity of the snow piles. Members of the Bonita Optimist Club will also
assist during the festivities.
Santa Claus, accompanied by elves, will make his annual appearance and give
candy canes to the children. Publicity for the event is being handled by the
City Public Information Coordinator.
In the event rain forces cancellation of the event on December 13, the
ceremonies will take place on December 19.
FISCAL IMPACT: The cost of the snow is approximately $1 ,850 and is expected
to be defrayed by community contributions, augmented by $500 which has been
budgeted for this purpose. The cost of insurance to cover the first $100,000
of liability is approximately $1100.

Snow Scene to be completed at Chula Vista on
December 13, 1984.
We did not discuss the time of day you wanted the
scene to be finished, so you will notice that I
left that portion blank.
After you have consulted with Jose Rico, if there
are any changes to be made to this agreement, please
let me know and we will amend the agreement accord-
ingly.
