The City will conduct its annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in the Civic
Center Plaza at 7:00 p.m. , Thursday, December 8, 1983.
RECOMMENDATION: That Council:
1. accept the report;
2. approve the attached agreement and authorize the Mayor to sign it on
behalf of the City.
BOARDS/COMMISSIONS RECOMMENDATION: Not applicable.
DISCUSSION:
The following activities have been planned for this year' s Christmas tree
lighting festivities:
Master of Ceremonies duties will be shared by Ron Jordan and Wendy Ross of
radio station KS-103 FM.
Guest of Honor will be Kurt Bevacqua of the San Diego Padres baseball team.
Musical entertainment will be provided by the "Music Machine" from Bonita
Vista High School.
Trees will be lighted the same as in previous years, but lights will not
blink.
There will be two snowpiles provided; one on the grass for children 8 years of
age and under and one on Memorial Way for children 9 and over.

Before the Union Ice Company will deliver the snow, it requires the City to
execute a written agreement for the service. The agreement also includes a
clause holding the Company harmless for any damages to City property during
delivery of the snow. A certificate of insurance is required from the City in
the amount of $1 million, showing the Union Ice Company as an additional
insured.
Restrooms will be available in the Public Services Building and 250 chairs
will be set up in the plaza for spectators' use.
Police reserve officers will be assigned to ensure safe conduct in the
vicinity of the snowpiles.
Santa Claus, accompanied by elves, will make his annual appearance and give
candy canes to the children. Hot cider will be available to the spectators.
Publicity for the event is being handled by the City' s Public Information
Coordinator.
In the event rain forces cancellation of the event on December 8, the
ceremonies will take place on December 15.
FISCAL IMPACT: Cost of the event will be defrayed by funds received from
public contributions, augmented as necessary with budgeted funds.
