Meeting Date 7/26/83
ITEM TITLE: Resolution /4?-50 Extending contract for the City's annual
requirement of library books
SUBMITTED BY: Library Director , (4/5ths Vote: Yes No X )
Purchasing Agent {ti,
REVIEWED BY: City Manager
Resolution No. 10522, adopted June 23, 1981 , approved the cooperative bid with
the City of San Diego for the City of Chula Vista's requirements for library
books. The contract was awarded to Baker & Taylor Company.
RECOMMENDATION: That Council extends the contract to cover the period
July 1 , 1983, through June 30, 1984.
BOARDS/COMMISSIONS RECOMMENDATION: Not applicable.
DISCUSSION:
The contract provides for the following discounts:
PERCENT OFF PUBLISHER'S
DESCRIPTION STANDARD PRICE
1 . Trade Books 42%
2. Technical & Textbooks 42.2% to 0%
3. Books of Trade Nature 42.2%
4. Single Binding Editions 38%
5. Fair Trade Books At Fair Trade Price
6. Mass Paperbacks 27%
7. Publisher's Library Binding 10.2%
The contract contains an option to renew for additional one year periods
through June 30, 1986, at the same prices and conditions. The original bid in
1981 had two bidders, Baker & Taylor Company and Brodart Inc. Brodart's
representative currently indicates that they cannot meet the discounts allowed
the City. San Diego and Chula Vista receive the largest discount off of
published book prices in San Diego County.
The recommendation for renewal was based on the large discount, integrity of
Baker & Taylor in fully applying these discounts, and the fact that Baker &
Taylor has been reliable, prompt and responsive.
FISCAL IMPACT: Funds available in Library account.
