La Quintals engineer, Mr. Frank Phillips, acting as their agent has requested that the City defer the requirement to remove and relocate the existing utility pole at the most easterly side of the property. According to the City Code, the Council must consider this matter at a public hearing. RECOMMENDATION: That the Council adopt the subject resolution after holding the required public hearing. BOARDS/COMMISSIONS RECOMMENDATION: Not applicable. DISCUSSION: La Quinta Motor Inns, Inc. , was required by Code to underground the existing overhead utility lines on its proposed motel site at 150 Bonita Road. The company requested a deferral of this requirement. The Council denied the request after holding a public hearing on the matter on August 20th. In order to completely underground the lines onsite, the most easterly utility pole must be relocated eight to ten feet east of its present location (see Exhibit "A"). Mr. Frank Phillips of Phillips-Reynolds Engineering recently requested that the City allow La Quinta to leave the existing pole in its present location and go underground from there. He states that the cost of moving the pole eight to ten feet is in the neighborhood of $5,000-$7,000. The Council may defer or vary from the requirement to underground if the enforcement of such a requirement would cause undue hardship to the owner and the deferral will not result in a detriment to the health, safety or general welfare of the neighborhood. i , -,, .1 cf Chula Vii::., C; ;i Ornia Dated Page 2, Item 6 Meeting Date 10/15/85 To underground eight to ten feet of overhead lines at a cost of $5,000-$7,000 would not be cost effective. According to the grading plan for the project, locating the new pole where it is proposed would raise the pole two to three feet, perhaps making it more noticeable than the existing pole. All other lines originally intended to be undergrounded will be converted. The total underground conversion totals approximately 450 linear feet. Based on the facts contained herein, it is recommended that the subject request be granted. A transparency is available for Council 's viewing. FISCAL IMPACT: None. JWH:fp/PB010 WPC 1668E
