HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda Statement 1985/05/28 Item 11 COUNCIL AGENDA STATEMENT Item f47 1/ Meeting Date 5/14/85 ITEM TITLE: Resolution 420.-3°2— Accepting bids, transferring funds and awarding contract for "The Repair of the Civic Center Tile in the City of Chula Vista, California." SUBMITTED BY: Director of Public Works/City Engineer lr Director of Building and Housing REVIEWED BY: City Manager (4/5ths Vote: Yes No X ) At 2:00 p.m. on April 17, 1985, in Conference Room 5 in the Public Services Building, the City Engineer received sealed bids for "The Repair of the Civic Center Tile in the City of Chula Vista, California." The project was included in the 1984-85 budget. The work involves the removal of the existing tile and replacing it with a new non-slip tile, the construction of a mow strip edge around lawn areas, and the relocation of the memorial within the existing grass parkway to near the fountain area. RECOMMENDATION: That City Council 1 . Transfer $40,000 from the Revenue Sharing contingency account to Replaced Tiles-Civic Center Plaza account. 2. Authorize expenditure of $97,556.38. 3. Accept bids and award contract to Klaser Tile Co. , Chula Vista, in the amount of $94,785.00. BOARDS/COMMISSIONS RECOMMENDATION: Not applicable. DISCUSSION: Bids were received from four contractors as follows: Bidder Bid Amount 1 . Klaser Tile Co. , Chula Vista $ 94,785.00 2. Jack E. Sutton, San Diego 117,250.00 3. Frechtel Story, Inc. , San Diego 148,000.00 4. Martin L. Gray Ceramic Tile, San Marcos 167,601 .00 The low bid by Klaser Tile Co. is above the budgeted estimate of $65,000 by $29,785. The original scope of the project proposed the use of a thin set base over the existing mortar base. It was found that this could not be done and the existing 1-1/2" thick cement grout bed must be removed and replaced. Also, the original metal screeds must be removed. This is the reason for the increase in the cost of the project. Page 2, Item Meeting Date- Based on a review of the bids received and because of the added work in the scope of the project, we believe the low bid is satisfactory and recommend awarding the contract to Klaser Tile Co.-Chula Vista. Attached is the Contractor's Disclosure Statement. The work will not start until after May 18, 1985. FISCAL IMPACT: Transfer of $40,000 from Revenue Sharing contingencies fund to Project Account Replace Tiles-Civic Center Plaza.
