Item 15
Meeting Date 5/7/85
ITEM TITLE: Resolution /-26 / 6 Authorizing the Mayor to execute a
contract with San Diego Fireworks for Fourth of July Display
SUBMITTED BY: Acting Director of Parks & Recreation) ! '
REVIEWED BY: City Manager (4/5ths Vote: Yes No X )
Three responses were received to a Request for Proposal for the City' s Fourth
of July fireworks display. San Diego Fireworks was selected and has submitted
a contract for the work.
RECOMMENDATION: That Council authorize the Mayor to execute the contract
with San Diego Fireworks.
BOARDS/COMMISSIONS RECOMMENDATION: Not applicable.
DISCUSSION:
Council approved $10,000 in the FY 1984-85 budget to fund an Independence Day
celebration, with the understanding that public contributions will again be
solicited to help defray expenses.
Last year, the City conducted its first Fourth of July fireworks display in
many years. It was well attended and there were no accidents attributed to
the event. $5,525 of the cost was offset by contributions from local
businesses, civic organizations and citizens.
A staff committee was formed to ensure another successful event. After
reviewing proposals submitted by three pyrotechnics firms, the committee
unanimously agreed to select San Diego Fireworks, who conducted last year's
display.
Permission to use Port District land for the event has been received and the
Harbor Police will again provide a boat to keep boaters out of the safety
zone. This year, portable restrooms will be conveniently located for public
use and additional bins will be provided to handle the large amount of trash
anticipated, based on last year's experience. Rohr Industries has given
permission to use their Tidelands Avenue parking lot.
The Public Information Coordinator will handle publicity to encourage large
public attendance again this year.
FISCAL IMPACT: $10,000 has been budgeted for the event, but will be offset
to an unknown extent by outside contributions.
